Libraries of the world IV | Biblioteca de les Aigües.

in WORLD OF XPILAR2 years ago

Getting back into the swing of things after the Christmas holidays, today I am back with another article about libraries around the world.

This one is about a library in Barcelona, the Library of the Aigües (water in Catalan). The work was commissioned by a publication specialised in architecture, as the building in which the current library is located is part of the Pompeu Fabra University campus, and was completely refurbished with a spectacular architectural intervention that won several prizes for its innovative refurbishment.

The upper part of the building was originally an enormous water tank that supplied the Ciutadella area of Barcelona for the Universal Exhibition of 1929. It was later taken out of service and turned into a storage area for municipal junk for no particular purpose. It was at the end of the 1990s when, as it was within the university grounds, the idea of converting it into a library was successfully considered, using the large brick pillars that supported the water tank as a substantial part of the internal distribution of the reading space. The final result was a successful integration within the university centre of a building that had been condemned to disappear and served as an example that with taste and professionalism it is possible to recover old architectural pieces as a quality public service.

As an anecdote, in the preliminary study of the project a certain Antoni Gaudí was listed as a collaborator, does that ring a bell?

That is impressive, seeing such high ceiling and walls done with bricks in certain pattern always makes me think how the people in old time have the sense of esthetic. Today we do not see such love to beauty of buildings. Might be a special feeling when people sit and study there :)

Many thanks @art-venture for appreciating and supporting my work. It is highly motivating for me.

And yes, the feeling of being inside this library is rather mystic. Very very special.
