Hunter's comment

This project describes a group of auxetic-inspired material structures that can transform into various shapes upon compression. While the majority of the studies of auxetic materials focus on their mechanical properties and topological variations, our work proposes a parametric design approach that gives auxetic structures the ability to deform beyond shrinking or expanding for the first time.

Hunter's Comments

Auxatic materials are those which exhibit Negative Poisson’s Ratio (NPR).
Meaning when stretched they start becoming thicker in perpendicular direction and vice versa.
Designing these materials into different purpose built structure is the real science.

Potential Applications

Vast applications in filed like:

  • Robotics(exoskeleton)
  • Aerospace
  • Packing
  • Interior Design

Great Hunt! There are many applications for this technology. You could even use it for shoes and clothing:

For anybody who is interested here is a more technical intro on Auxetics material:

When it comes to commercial mass prodcution, caterign to few specific business clients and/or making kids toys would be the best approach to take.

No doubt, this material is a wonder of the modern age. This is gonna change the way of manufacturing of lot of things in many fields. We'll be seeing the things made with this material, completely and/or partially, demonstrating the features which change the overall perspective, we previously had for them.

Yes, @xabi, I agreed. This will give the robotics engineers the power to give the robotic exoskeletons capabilities, which were not possible so far. And yes, in making of transformable/reconfigurable furniture as well.

A very useful finding indeed. Such material can have vast applications in many industries. There are endless options with this material such as robotics, medical field, research activities, packaging, 3D modeling.. etc
A great discovery for sure and in future we will find this material ion out household too.
Great hunt
