Crappy Camera Stop Motion
My son (10 years old) and I (older than that) decided to try our hand at something new the other day: stop motion! We actually have tried it before and laughed and laughed. His attention span is shor... ooh! Squirrel!... and.. where was I?
Oh yes. I didn't have much time to keep him engaged but wanted to try to find something fun for myself, too, so in addition to setting up some lego's, I felt this was a great time to use my floppy disk based crappy camera! Yes. Oh yes. 0.4 megapixels of stop motion goodness coming right at you!
So how did I accomplish such a feat, you ask?
Well, the camera is a camera after all, even if it is crappy. The hardest part was adjusting the props and then getting the pictures from disk to phone. I did create the animation itself on my phone, using Rough Animator on a Note 9. Great phone.
So, this is just a short little animation, a few seconds in length. A proof of concept. The next will tell more of a story.

Hahaha! This is so amusing!! Love it when they stepped on Dark Vader, I really lol
You're the first one to mention that! Thanks! I was worried it was a little too dark to see properly, so I'm glad to see someone caught it :)
Hey, it's how they used to do it in those old monster movies back before we had digital editing and computers to do the work. Glad you and your son had fun, that's the important thing.

Thanks! And yeah, it was fun. The little guy got to goof and monkey around, which he absolutely loves to do. :)

Thank you very much!
Looks like you and your son had fun making this. I don’t know how you did it but it is quite a talent. 😊
Of course, he kept pushing his face in front of the camera to photo bomb the toys and thought it was great fun. Little goofball. :) He had a blast!
How many images did you end up with? I have played around with these before and they are an immense amount of work. I found a tripod to be invaluable. Another angle along the same vein is time lapse.
I didn't end up with too many; about 30 or 35, not much more than that; the floppy disks can't hold much more than that! I'd actually like to do a 1 or 2 minute story; that might require more floppy disks than I currently have.
A tripod is a necessity, absolutely. A remote shutter release is a big help too! My crappy old camera, however, does not have that, so there was definitely shake. Looking forward to trying this again! With better lighting.
Ha! I see some famous new movie makers here in the offing my friend.
Blessings!
Haha, thank you!
My pleasure my friend!
Blessings!
Lovely!
Thank you!
Good old stop-motion :>)
I'm sure the two of you had a fun time with that ( focus or not ).
Not sure why I never tried my hands on that, being into film making for almost two decades and having had plenty of LEGO around. Now I think of it, I definitely considered doing this, with LEGO, might even have gave it half a try but I was probably too impatient.
I love the work of Ray Harryhausen as well as the films by Czech stop-motion master Jan Svankmajer. You migh wanna check out his take on Alice in Wonderland ( Alice, 1990 ) if you haven't heard of him.
P.S. All my game making posts can be found on my blog page. I only got into this a month ago though, after having dabbled with it a decade or two ago ( Fun fact: my younger brother is a successful game maker. I was an ( unsuccessful ) filmmaker who turned blogger / crypto investor and now game maker - among other things )
See you around!
I've never heard of those film makers before, but I'll spend some time soon to look them up.
I have a few games in various stages of progression right now, two mobile and one old-style analogue table-top. I haven't posted much of them because... well... because... but I'll get that corrected soon!
hahaha... a floppy disk based camera?!
I can imagine :D
thanks for presenting on #pypt
lol! Yes, it really is a floppy disk based camera. It's ancient, and I had to look for a USB-floppy reader. I really ought to make a post dedicated to it. I've really become infatuated with this camera.
My daughter just recently tried this - then she discovered the reverse button, thought it was hilarious, so that put a stop to stop motion! Very time-consuming - looks like you had a good time.

Reverse! I think I might need to try that. Thanks for the idea!
