A Freewrite: Stone Wall

If this stone wall could tell it's own story, what do you think it would be?
Families?
Horses?
Dogs and cats, field mice and bees?

A small family, perhaps, with an old, sad widower raising her two children the best she could until they were too restless to stay home, and the horses too restless to be kept by one old lady.

And dogs. Stories of family dogs chasing the field mice into the waiting paws of the family cats. Dogs and cats working together; a better time.

These stone walls would tell a story of a house with two stories, bottom with the kitchen and mud room, and top with three small bedrooms, each with a window to peer out into the pasture before it was retaken by the woods.

There would be stories of young children playing with the dogs chasing the mice, and children leading and feeding the horses, and not-so-young-children bringing home courtiers, and dances, and singing, and crying over break-ups, and lost family members, and passed dogs who will never again chase a mouse to a cat.

And a story of that old widower finally moving on with a tear in her eye, taking only memories with her, yet leaving those behind for these stone walls to share with whomever stops to listen before they, too, finally move on.

I like the story wwwiebe. I wonder how it is at night, with friends, some beers and a bonfire.

That would be a lot of fun! I'll need to retrace my ride to find the location again first! Might be really need to do in the fall.

Thank you!

It's always a lil sad to see a grand old house that's been abandoned, and one can't help but let it bring on thoughts about how life was when it was inhabited, who were its inhabitants, and general goings-on... exactly like you've outlined!

I like how you've written it! Hope it was a good 'ending' to the people there even if the house didn't have one. Or maybe its end is yet to come... And there may be a tomorrow for it after all...

Cheers, and have a good weekend!

Thank you! I was trail riding and happened upon this old structure seemingly in the middle of nowhere and obviously overrun by the landscape now. I have no idea what it originally was - it sure looks like it was a house at one point - or for whom, and it's a neat mystery to ponder.

Have a great weekend!

I feel the same way about old building walls or foundations. People with stories used to inhabit them, or house their animals in them, they loved, they cried, they had babies, they wrote stories by candlelight. Nice read this one.

Very good writing sir wwwiebe! All those things were probably going on that the stone walls witnessed, well said. I wonder how old that place is?
