"Soon a Woman" - A Smattering of Knowledge and an Abundance of Confidence

The good, the bad, and the ugly... You know how professional photographers earn admiration? They take hundreds of photos of a subject, dump them on a lighttable, pick one or two - the best ones, of course - and only show those. And everybody gushes about what exceptionally gifted artists they are :-) How easy it would be to withhold the inevitable screw-ups that happen in the process of learning art...

 
Die Guten, die Bösen und die Hässlichen... Wisst ihr, wie professionelle Fotografen die Bewunderung des Publikums erreichen? Sie machen von einem Motiv hunderte von Fotos, klatschen sie auf einen Leuchttisch, wählen ein oder zwei aus - die besten natürlich - und zeigen nur diese. Und alle Welt schwärmt davon, was für außergewöhnlich begabte Künstler sie doch sind :-) Wie einfach es wäre, die unvermeidlichen Fehler, die beim Lernen in der Kunst passieren, unter den Tisch zu kehren...

 

 
In passing, I had heard of a technique called "grissaille", a concept of underpainting the values of an image in shades of gray and then overlaying the colors. Armed with only the most basic idea of this, I figured (in an overabundance of self confidence) that I would try it and take my portrait painting to new hights. Yeah, right!

 
En passant hatte ich von einer Technik namens "Grissaille" gehört, einem Konzept, bei dem die Helligkeitswerte eines Bildes in Grautönen untermalt und dann die Farben darüber lasiert werden. Nur mit der grundlegendsten Ahnung davon bewaffnet, dachte ich mir in einem Anfall unerschütterlichen Selbstvertrauens, dass ich das versuchen und meine Porträtmalerei zu neuen Höhen führen würde. Jawoll!

 

 
By the time I laid on the color, I learned the hard way, that my "grisaille" was more akin to Indian war paint, because I was in a rush, and I hadn't grasped that the shading of the underpainting needs to be exact - basically a finished painting in shades of gray. Nothing was going to fix this, except painting over it opaquely (which can be done with gouache) but that wasn't the point of the exercise, was it? Should have studied the old masters before taking brush to paper :-)

 
Als ich die Farbe auftrug, lernte ich auf die harte Tour, dass meine "Grisaille" eher einer indianischen Kriegsbemalung glich, weil ich in der Eile nicht begriffen hatte, dass die Schattierungen der Untermalung exakt sein müssen - im Grunde ein fertiges Gemälde in Grautönen. Das Problem war nicht mehr zu beseitigen, außer wenn ich das Bild deckend übermalen würde (was mit Gouache möglich ist), aber darum ging es bei dieser Übung ja nicht! Ich hätte mir besser die alten Meister mal genauer angesehen, bevor ich den Pinsel in die Hand nahm :-)

 

 
Oh well, mistakes must be made to learn something. Funny thing is, as she neared completion, I somehow still liked the little girl, even with the war paint. So I decided to share her and her story anyway. After all, I'm not a professional photographer...

 
Na gut, Fehler sind dazu da, gemacht zu werden. Der Witz an der Sache ist, als sie gegen Ende immer mehr Gestalt annahm, gefiel mir das kleine Mädchen trotzdem irgendwie, auch mit der Kriegsbemalung. Also entschloss ich mich, sie und ihre Geschichte hier zu teilen. Ich bin schließlich kein Profifotograf...
