Becoming a writer through traveling (4) – Writingamigo starts volunteering... and surfing!
People tell one thing,
they actually do the opposite.
What do you believe in?
So, after resting for a couple of days at the Tamarindo beach, Writingamigo realized that he has to do something. One of the reasons was his financial situation, but more importantly – he wanted to make his journey count.
That is how Writingamigo started volunteering in a surf camp. He helped to maintain the camp in the jungle; he helped in the kitchen; and he was also part of the huge community.
This kind of life was super interesting for Writingamgio, as he was sleeping in a tent, or in a hammock under the mango tree; he could find some time to read again; he was always surrounded by jungle monkeys and iguanas; and even showered with a scorpion once (he actually did not like that).
However, as there is no house without sewerage, there is also no perfect place. Writingamigo started realizing how careless the owners of the surf camp are. They started to be sexist towards other women; they never stopped drinking; and it seemed that they think of themselves as of some jungle Gods. Writingamigo learned his lesson:
If you constantly say “Puravida”, act happy, and claim yourself to be a great person… you might still be a corrupted douchebag. The actions are what matters.
Anyway, Writingamigo did not let anyone to affect his mood. The good thing was that no one was in a position to do it as well. Writingamigo just loved not to be committed and dependent on something. So he just took a surfboard for a first time in his life, and let it all go. It was hard; he crashed a lot; and you know what? Writingamigo LOVED IT!
I will tell you a secret: Writingamigo had so many first times during his trip that he realized this one thing– only by trying and doing, you can expect to be great at something. Also, with a right attitude nothing is that scary in this life.
