Tips for Preventing Short Term Memory Loss

For people who are suffering from short and long term memory loss, there is no question that you need to take immediate action to resolve this condition. There is also no question that you can regrow your lost memories if you put in the right amount of effort into addressing this problem. Here are a few tips that will help you overcome short term memory loss and develop long term memory.

  • Get plenty of sleep every night. Sleep not only relaxes your mind, but it also gives your body the rest that it needs. When you don't get enough sleep, you are less productive during the day. This can mean that you do not learn as much during the day, or that you fail to hold up with assignments because you are not refreshed. It is best to get at least seven hours of sleep every night.

  • Do your best to prevent short term memory problems from happening in the first place. One of the most common ways to do this is to keep your bedroom clean. A cluttered bedroom makes it harder for you to concentrate on things you need to do, because you are distracted by the colors, smells, or even the clutter. Instead, it would be ideal to use a bedroom that is organized and neat. You should also make sure that your bed is at a comfortable height so that you are not tempted to stretch out.

  • Learn how to manage your time better. In addition to having a healthy diet, which will help in your short term memory, it would also be helpful if you learn to prioritize tasks and complete them before moving onto the next one. If you do not learn how to do this, you might end up with an overabundance of projects that consume your energy, leaving you with very little time to learn and absorb new information.

  • Exercise more. Studies have shown that those who exercise daily have better short term memory. Not only does exercising make you more alert and better able to focus, but it improves your whole brain function. Regular physical activity improves blood flow and oxygen flow throughout the body, and these are vital components of your memory. Regular exercise also releases neurochemicals, such as dopamine, which boost your brain functions and allow you to think and remember better.

  • Eat right. Eating the right kind of food keeps your brain stimulated and fed, and will also help you process information more quickly. When you eat healthily, you will have more energy to work with every day. As a result, you will have better memory function, which makes it easier for you to remember facts, names, dates, and anything else that you may need to take note of during the day.

  • Sleep well. A good night's sleep is necessary for healthy brain functioning. A lack of sleep can actually cause you to forget facts you have already learnt. The reason why this happens is because when you don't get enough sleep, you don't feel tired enough to stay focused on the tasks at hand, so you end up making impulsive mistakes. So, by taking a quality nap before bed, or sleeping for eight hours a night, you can actually give yourself a reprieve from this kind of memory loss.


    It is not necessarily only short term memory loss that can affect your concentration. Aside from the above mentioned factors, poor diet, insufficient exercise, and poor sleep can also lead to memory loss. This is especially true for those suffering from depression. By treating these factors, you can improve your overall memory, and your chances of solving problems and of completing tasks will be increased as well.
