On September 2016 was the 33rd running of the Chequamegon Fat Tire 40 Mountain Bike Race which is a piece of the Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival. http://www.cheqfattire.com/ The “Shwammy” as it is known by local people is a 40 mile mountain bicycle race keep running in the sloping northwoods of Northwestern Wisconsin. Specifically, the race takes off of downtown Hayward, WI and completions 40 miles later at the base range of the old Telemark Ski Resort.

I cherish going to races that are sufficiently huge to have bundle get the prior night. I simply cherish the climate and the foresight of the ride. I like getting my apparatus all laid out the night prior to, my race number/chip joined to my bicycle and gels taped to my bicycle’s top tube. I don’t generally get nerved up about hustling itself.

I totally adore the ride and can hardly wait till the race begins

I was organized beside a person that had done the race 8 or 9 times and said he really wanted to return a seemingly endless amount of time. We traded a couple words about this race being such an extraordinary occasion and I truly loved what he said in regards to not having the capacity to request a superior day

A significant part of the race course imparts track to the American Birkebeiner ski trail which is the biggest crosscountry ski marathon in the country. The members of the “Shwammy” are picked by lottery and there are 1,800 riders in the race. The race begins at 10:00 am and the enclosure begins to fill as ahead of schedule as 4:30 am as riders racer for begin positions.

The begin is a mass begin and it’s totally insane! It’s difficult to disclose what it resembles to be stuffed between 1800 bicycles and riders. We begin at the Hayward school and ride on Main Street through the town out to the trail. People are arranged and down the road cheering and ringing cowbells. It’s a truly remarkable affair and there is NO space for a mistake! I’ve heard some terrible stories about accidents on the begin and trust I’m never required in one!

The principal mile of the race moves down Main Street in downtown Hayward and heads north on Hwy 53 for another mile before turning east on the remainder of the blacktop. For at any rate the primary mile you are encompassed by riders commonly inside inches or feet from you.

Huge potential for mass catastrophe.

The race left the asphalt at what’s called Rosie’s Field as the course takes off north on the Birkebeiner trail. The primary portion of the race was a persistent imtermittent move to the second most astounding rise on the course. The following 9 miles we twisted through singletrack and rutted logging streets giving back all the height we’d earned in the initial 20 and investigated at the Seeley Fire Tower Climb which is a four layered ascend a rutted rock and shake

seepage.

I picked up spots as I pounded each and every up slope. My legs were feeling great and I continued pushing hard past the 5 mile mark as I kept on picking off more places. I got a bit apprehensive that perhaps I was pushing too hard, too soon as my heart rate was hanging in the 160s and pegging the high 170s at the highest point of the slopes.

I was grabbing a considerable measure of spots however and figured I would hazard it.

Fire Tower was uneventful as I advanced toward the top before enjoying almost 2 miles of downhill on the opposite side to rejoin the Birkie Trail once more.

could reel a couple of riders back in before peaking the highest point of Telemark to make the fun nice down the ski slope to the completion. Once over the top, you simply let it tear down the ski slope and appreciate the ride. There is a left hander with a little up slope just before the completion that requires a decent push to keep your pace.

I anticipated my race time to be 2 hours, 37 minutes. I really completed ten minutes under that.
