Working For Retirement - Tragic Comedy

retirement.jpg

Working so that I can Stop Working - Is a bit contradictory when you think about it. This mentality is popular throughout much of the developed world. Taking jobs for the security of "retirement"...believing in a pension plan and old age benefits.

Is this the best way to go about sculpting our lives?

Trading many of our years now for hopefully some free time later to maybe be able to have "retirement status".

It's kind of a weird concept. Even working a job for years and years and years...is a seemingly weird and bizarre concept. We are creator's first and foremost. So to do a job for a good majority of our lives seems kind of peculiar. We are resourceful creatures and have a tremendous ability to adapt and expand. With this in mind it doesn't make a lot of sense that increasingly so, people will work in one job for the rest of their days.

Think of all the people who have plugged away at the same gig...just to get the hours banked for "retirement".

Perhaps the "banking of hours for retirement" was a decision based in fear of making a mistake. Or perhaps it's a point of "settling"...or perhaps it's the preference/choice.

Initially I thought the goal in creating a life was to see how quickly one can get to "retired" status. Once hear - then can focus on building a life for real and doing all the stuff that one wants to do. I challenged this point. I asked myself: wouldn't it make a lot more sense to work on doing the things I want - now...stop postponing and actually utilize any work I am engaged within to be a point of a support and stepping stone for creating what I want that is a bigger working project that will take time.

Everyone is a builder. In a way, we are always building. We are either building for ourselves or we aren't.

I've realized that retirement is an illusion and mirage. I mean sure it can be a real thing for many...But for me - it doesn't make much sense - because: Life is a harmony of work and play here together.

My Life is My Work.

My Life is My Play

The Quality of my Life is the fruits of my Labor

  • changing the mindset around "retirement" - is worth investigating

  • Vigor and Vitality exist in both work and play

Work and play for yourself. It's up to each of us to work out our best life

Will do buddy and some day will reach your level (at least will try ;) )

I don’t see retirement as a lack of work, rather the financial freedom to do what I want. That may well include work but I will choose to do it rather than needing to do so to pay bills.
Iam a freelancer so pick and choose which roles I do but at present I need to work to pay bills. This also allows me to plan for the future as I see fit, save more or less depending on how much I’m earning and what my goals are. I can even choose to take several months off if I choose and fit work around my lifestyle instead of the other way round.

wow - very cool @grizgal

Especially:

I can even choose to take several months off if I choose and fit work around my lifestyle instead of the other way round.

I don't expect I will ever "retire," and actually that hasn't been part of my goals since... maybe my mid-30's(?) and I'm 57 now. I hope to continue creating art, writing and "trading odds and ends" as long as I am cognitively able to do so.

Perhaps the biggest challenge in life is to discover what it is that is truly meaningful to you... and then to find ways to monetize that sufficiently that you can occasionally eat.

Inspirational @denmarkguy

  • Thank You for sharing, You are indeed an awesome example

  • Respect :)

You made me laugh in a eureka like way when you said:

Ha!

Steem On!

Good thoughts on a critical moment in life. It is good to be prepared to enter
retirement. Something I think about from time to time even is this is decades away.
I think also that I need a hobby or task to keep working on something. Otherwise, you are pretty quickly lost in just living without doing anything. I have seen this too often.

Great points @jamjamfood

Golf, Skiing and Writing are 3 of mine :)

I would one day like to Birdie every hole in a round of golf - not sure if it's ever been done...so a pretty lofty goal lol...but a fun one to play with :)

Big goals are the best. You need something which requires a huge time investment. :-)

Wow - I really like that - Thanks so much for taking the time to Articulate that for me!

I work to have more freedom, not to retire.
I don't have in my plan any "retirement".

I like it, well said!
