MOVIE REVIEW: "Rocky" (1976)

Time

Synopsis: Rocky Balboa is a small working-class Philadelphia boxer who is arbitrarily chosen to fight heavyweight champion Apollo Creed when the opponent of the undefeated fighter scheduled for the fight is injured.

From time to time, cinema can create movies that become timeless. Strangely, some of these films are consecrated with actors or actresses who are not so good, but who somehow make up characters who gain public sympathy and critics specialize in an unexpected way. So, it is precisely within this "magical" effect that this movie fits with a glove.

The challenging world of boxing is portrayed in a seemingly simple script, but gradually it turns out to the viewer as something more complex than expected. Mostly throughout its surprisingly dramatic context, the whole narrative is built on a solid foundation that fits many strong roots throughout its development.

The portrayal of this sport on the big screen is not just a simple photograph used as any excuse to write a story, but a more immersive composition behind the scenes surrounding this sport mode. It's not just about showing boxing as a spectacle... It is about the power a sport can have in the life of a person determined to practice it and how far this choice can influence the lives of others around you.

Talk Film Society

Starring Sylvester Stallone in a very safe and competent manner, this is - arguably - one of the best (if not the best) work of his career. The technical and artistic work that involves the creation of Rocky Balboa as a human being is very consistent because it's done based on multiple layers and not just a single one (which naturally makes him a more believable figure).

Although the premise revolves around just a single main character (something that would tend to sound boring and monotonous, depending on its development), it is commendable the writers' effort to make every other character (as well as all the building elements) surrounding the movie orbit him and make him win all the spotlight (even if there are some slips in the overall result).

The highlight for Stallone is no coincidence, after all, Rocky is the soul of the movie and it is through it that everything connects. His character's determination and fragility are key aspects - and very well exposed by him on screen - that make the weight of the boxing narrative in the background really treated as something else (as I mentioned earlier) and get the weight you need to get the movie into something that should be remembered.

Surrounded by other charismatic characters (who are played by a good cast), the narrative still finds room to stir up other dilemmas and still convinces the audience about an unusual surprise - Rocky's iconic relationship with Adrian - that ends up giving a more sentimental atmosphere to the story and all this creates a very interesting counterpoint because it makes room for extra humanization in the characters and all of this is well tied up and explored by director John Avildsen, who does a great job of blending the drama and romance without sounding corny.

As far as its technical categories are concerned, what is worth mentioning is the unforgettable soundtrack (composed by Bill Conti), the very busy editing of scenes (especially at times when the great fighting scenes occur inside the ring) and a photograph that excels through the denser moments of the narrative. In general, even though it's not a well-produced movie (because everything seems to be very "handmade"), it has all these aspects in its favor.

Hollywoodiano

Rocky has become so much more than just a movie because it has managed to project itself completely off the screen as a strong reference of strength and determination that dialogues with the audience in a relevant, creative and timeless manner in its many strands that easily connect with real-world problems and its persistent obstacles.

What makes this movie even more impressive for Sylvester Stallone is that he also wrote the screenplay.

That's for sure.
