MOVIE REVIEW: "Closer" (2004)
Synopsis: The movie follows the comings and goings in the romantic relationships of four characters in London: a journalist, his muse, a dermatologist and a photographer. Their sexual conflicts, betrayals, reunions and dislocations are the main stage of this drama.
However complex personal relationships may be in adulthood, sooner or later every human being will have a chance to know their joys and frustrations that are inherent in these types of relationships (even if in a trivial way). It's no use wanting to be careful and surround yourself with caution, because within this malicious game of feelings... Everyone, somehow, always gets hurt and / or ends up hurting someone.
When the lives of four strangers unexpectedly intersect and they begin to become intimately involved, none of them could imagine how connected they would be to each other. The script benefits from this conflict and builds on an extremely interesting narrative that puts in the center of the spotlight the fleetingness and unpredictability that are hidden in casual encounters that hide a great potential to become something else.
However, when one of their feelings is not so reciprocal (arousing a compulsive obsession) and the other is more engaging than expected (creating a very high dependency and neediness bond)... Some of the characters break the "protocol" of normality and create conflicts full of layers that are hard to peel and too bitter to ingest easily because they belong to an essentially complicated nature.
This is all shown with well thought out and refined cinematography, which shows good quality production in technical aspects such as a very punctual photography work, a carefully chosen soundtrack (which has a great effect on the story), an editing that scenes that it ties the whole movie with efficient teaching and that is self-explanatory because it is precisely well-explored work (especially with regard to the presentation of the scenarios) and a beautiful and touching lighting work.
The reality of the facts arising in response to the actions (whether spontaneous or coldly calculated) of each character turns out to be an exciting and challenging cat and mouse game where there are no winners... There is only one false and rude sense of omnipotence that then it is made as each one realizes - in their own way - that there is really no victory, quite the contrary, there is only a disturbing and disturbing void that reveals how sad they really are.
The master bedroom talent of Julia Roberts, Clive Owen, Natalie Portman and Jude Law is unquestionable, and even though all their respective characters are not as well distributed with respect to screen time, they all have the depth necessary to be part. essentials of the narrative. Each of them (with more than deserved prominence for Portman) appropriates their respective characters with a clarity of ideas that is very transparent and so the story flows at an engaging and very dynamic pace.

Whether in its most reflective scenes (always full of symbolism) or in scenes with a comic content where acid humor grows and steals the audience's attention for a moment until the drama returns again, the film follows a fine line that highlights the fragility of human feelings.
In the midst of this eagerness to problematize so many issues in interconnected ways, director Mike Nichols makes some misconceptions throughout his work. his career. The approach to the dilemmas is highly personal and intimate, his view of the issues is very real, and everything is handled with deep humanization (even in the thorniest issues), so that the audience can identify - or at least empathize - with the conflicts experienced by the characters.
Fleeing all possible stereotypes, Closer emerges as one of the most important and most adult romance movies ever made.
