What do you know about food poisoning?

Food poisoning takes place when you take in infected /contaminated or spoiled food, which could possibly lead to some signs like nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach cramps. It can as well be caused by some bacteria (which may be Salmonella or E. coli), viruses, or some other pathogens.

In order to reduce the Risk

  • Take good care and store the food properly
  • Thoroughly cook your food
  • Stay Away from cross-contamination
  • Make sure to expiration dates
  • Wash hands always, mostly before handling food
  • Keep raw and cooked foods separate from each. Other
  • Refrigerate perishables always
  • Avoid consuming undercooked or raw high-risk foods (like poultry, eggs, or seafood)

If food poisoning is suspected,

  • Drink enough water
  • Have a good rest
  • Meet a medical personnel if symptoms persist
  • Give the information to local health authority (if necessary)

Some Common Causes of food poisoning are ;

  • Bacteria: Salmonella, Staphylococcus aureus, Campylobacter, E. coli.

  • Viruses: Rotavirus, Norovirus.

  • Parasites: Toxoplasma, Trichinella

  • Food and water which has been contaminated

  • Handling and storing food properly

Some Common Symptoms of food poisoning are as follows

  • Nausea and vomiting, Abdominal cramps, Diarrhea, Dehydration, Fever, Headache

If any of these symptoms are seen in you, visit a medical personnel.

Complications of food poisoning

  1. Dehydration and mineral imbalance
  2. Some Organ damage for example kidney failure
  3. Reactive arthritis
  4. Guillain-Barré Syndrome (rare)
  5. Life-threatening conditions, mostly for susceptible populations (for example, elderly, young children, weakened immune system)

If food poisoning is suspected, it's important to:

  1. Be hydrated always
  2. Look after medical care if symptoms stay longer or worsen
  3. Report the incident to local health authorities (if necessary)

How can food poisoning be prevented and treated?

Prevention

Proper food handling: Store food at a good rate of temperature, safely Handel food, and as well avoid cross-contamination.

Cooking: Cook food totally and thoroughly, mostly meat, poultry, and also seafood.

Hygiene: Wash hands always, mostly before food is handled.

Safe food sources: Choose a good food sources, and avoid taking food from questionable sources.
