Initiative Q - So, what's the deal here?
I've been going nuts with this thing since yesterday. Because why not, right? It's free, you just have to sign up and invite others to sign up as well and, voila - You get Q's!
I've been trying to do some research to find out how legit this thing really is, but I'm not finding very much saying whether it is or isn't. Is it an email farming campaign? Is it just another failed attempt at an ICO? Or could it be the real thing? Some people are calling it a "2nd chance" if one missed the Bitcoin boat (or the Steemit boat, for that matter), but I'm not so sure. I'm also not not so sure, either. Ultimately, it doesn't look like there's anything to lose because at this point you simply give it your name and email address, and you can rack up quite a few Q's pretty quickly. Their timeline shows what looks to be a solid plan, and their hope is that each Q will eventually be worth $1 USD each. If this goal actually does become realized, those not taking action now will be kicking themselves.

Initiative Q is an attempt by ex-PayPal guys to create a new payment system instead of credit cards that were designed in the 1950s. The system uses its own currency, the Q, and to get people to start using the system once it's ready they are allocating Qs for free to people that sign up now (the amount drops as more people join - so better to join early). Signing up is free and they only ask for your name and an email address. There's nothing to lose but if this payment system becomes a world leading payment method your Qs can be worth a lot. If you missed getting bitcoin seven years ago, you wouldn't want to miss this.

Heh, sorry about that. I'm certainly not anyone in the know enough to be making announcements that others wouldn't have access to before me. I literally just found out about this in the last couple of days, so I'm getting the word out! :D
This has been going bananas on Facebook lately too, with all my friends sharing it - but bear in mind these are friends who haven't expressed any interested in crypto/blockchain what-so-ever before. So why are they going nuts over this all of a sudden?! Quite a mystery.
I wonder if we can find out exactly what has made people hooked and apply it to promoting Steem..
My guess is because they're literally giving it away like an airdropped sign-on bonus, and they're doing pretty well at marketing that fact. The way I understand it, they're trying to saturate it so that people simply have it. If they don't have it, they won't use it. And if they have to pay for it before they get it, they likely won't do it at all and it'll just fall into the realm of other shitty alts.
