Spanish map makers used to think that California was an island

Pretty much what the title says, but this cracks me up. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Spanish map makers believed that California was an island. Needless to say, one of the biggest cartographic errors ever made: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Island_of_California
