Technology brings a lot of convenience to our lives. Events that were once called impossible become possible with the development of technology. Of course, technology does not develop all at once. It spans a long time.

In my share, I will tell you about home phones used in homes and offices. Of course, we will learn what is going on in the background in this communication. We will see telephone exchanges and distributor telephone line cabinets on the streets.

There are many forms of communication in the world. With the phone, you can talk and communicate with someone who is miles away from you. This form of communication was discovered by two scientists in 1980. Most of us know these scientists. Their names are Alexander Graham Bell and Charles Sumner Tainter.

They tried this invention for the first time in 1980. The transmitter is placed on the roof of a school. The other scientist said, if you can hear me, go to the window and shake your hat. The scientist on the roof of the school understood very well what he was saying thanks to the phone and carried out this action. After this experiment was carried out successfully, there have been many developments until today.

Telephone switchboard


As an electronics and communication engineer, I would like to give you some information on this subject. Telephone lines have a certain voltage. These voltage values are 24-30 volts DC before picking up the handset, 10-12 Volts DC when picking up the handset, and 100-170 V AC when the phone is ringing.

I can explain the working principle of the phone as follows. The sound waves that come out of our mouths are first converted into electrical signals. With a different sending method, these signals are transmitted far away. The electrical signals are then converted into sound waves. In this way, the voice coming out of the mouth is transferred to the opposite side.

After this information, I would like to show you the telephone exchange.

The telephone exchanges are in a large building. All of the telephone line cables in the homes of people living in certain areas come here underground. Here you see the telephone cable lines of millions of users.

I worked here for a short time. You have to work very meticulously and carefully. Since the phone lines come from underground, there can be many problems. Like breaking and breaking. Therefore, it is necessary to check the telephone line in the house and the cable coming here.

If there is a break, the cable should be slid into the empty slot. A special pliers is needed for this. It is quite difficult to connect a new line among thousands of cables here. Because you need to pay attention to the nearby telephone line and not to disconnect it.


In the photo you can see how big a place it is. Many times, customers call this exchange and say that there is no sound from their phone. Employees here check here many times a day.

So how do you know which cable belongs to which user? Each user has their own unique address number. These address numbers are written on the slots here. There are cables to be controlled according to the numbers written.

In the picture below, there is a home phone line of approximately 1500 people. Home phone lines consist of 2 wires. So there are 3000 copper telephone wires in this photo alone. That's pretty much twill. 😊


Transfer and control cabinets on the street


The cable coming out of the switchboards is not directly connected to the houses. There are transfer and control cabinets in the streets and alleys. These are connected to the slots inside the cabinets. Because it is necessary to have connection points on the line. It will be simpler to control and modify these points.


Here you can see the inside of the Transfer cabinets. There are electronic cards in some cabinets. It is possible to provide further transfer with these cards.

The interiors of some cabinets are not smooth as you can see in the switchboard. In the photo below, the cables look like spider webs. It is dangerous if it is too confused and disorderly.


Necessary controls in these cabinets are made by field officers. They have a control phone in their hands. With this phone, the call signal on the line is controlled. If the signal given over the switchboard reaches here without any problems, there is a call sound on the phone.

With the development of technology, mobile phones have become widespread. Currently, many homes do not have a home phone. But these phones are used by businesses.
