Myra Ancient City 🌄

Hello people who love to travel,
With this post, we will go on a time travel. We will see the works of people who lived centuries ago. We will visit these places in amazement. Because you may not have seen a place like this before. Here we will see the rock tombs and the ancient city theater of Myra.

This place is in Turkey's Antalya province and Demre district. It got its name from the river that is located here. This is a Lycian city. Archaeological work here started in 2009 and still continues. Many artifacts under the ground are being revealed with great care.

Let's visit the city of Myra. I would like you to accompany me because I have very beautiful photos to show you.

Myra Ancient City – Rock Tombs – City Theater

In the summer, I had a travel plan from the Aegean region to the Mediterranean region. That's why I set out with my wife. I went to many destinations and visited them. This was a place I had never been before.

We were going to Antalya by car. Meanwhile, a brown sign caught our attention. The ancient city of Myra was written on it. It was close to where we were. We did a little internet research. We really thought we should see this place. We decided to go here by turning the steering wheel.

We got here in a very short time. Parking is available for vehicles at the entrance. We got out of our vehicle and came here. There is a security point at the entrance. You can enter the museum here by giving a card or cash. You can see the prices in the table below.

We had a museum card as we visited many museums and ancient cities on this trip. That's why we entered without waiting. The photo above shows you the entrance to the city. As we move forward, we will see much more beautiful things.

Wall column face patterns

They put these face-patterned columns at the city entrance and on the sides of the roads. Since there was an earthquake here at the time, these wall pieces were separated from their original places. It really takes art and skill to carve the tops of rocks like this in time.

After continuing on this road, there is a mountain on the left. They built a road here. We follow the road. There is a large tomb before us. I was really shocked when I saw this place. This place was built with a perfect architecture. The interior of the mountain has been perfectly excavated and converted into rock tombs.

I took a nice photo here. I am sharing this photo here for steemit. 😊 #steemexclusive

Rock tombs

In the lower parts of the mountain, we have the opportunity to see these tombs more closely. Here we entered a few dug graves. They pulled a rope because it was dangerous to approach some graves. We could only see them from afar. But this sculptural work on the rocks was enormous.

It feels different to think that there were people who lived here centuries ago. Seeing historical artifacts from ancient cultures and civilizations here takes us back to those times.

The rock tombs were built in layers. They put small little stairs to go up to these floors. In this way, access to each grave can be provided. But now that it is dangerous to climb this mountain, they did not open a road for us to go here.

Signs giving information about the Myra rock tombs are available here. In addition, the pictorial sign showed the house tombs and temple tombs located here. It is better for us to have explanatory texts in these places. This information, which conveys historical information, is useful for us.

Ancient Theater

It is understood from the size of this theater that many people lived here during the Lycian period. I saw a theater like this before on my Ephesus ancient city tour. But the theater here is a little smaller than there.

The theater has preserved its soundness until today. Columns in the lower parts and sides of the theater collapsed. There have been many earthquakes here.

Something happened in this theater that I liked. There are large sitting stones on the bottom floor. These were probably made for the important people of that time. Despite being stone, it was quite comfortable. 😊

Archaeological Excavations

Centuries ago, there was a city and a living space here. Natural disasters over the centuries have caused different formations here. The city you see here was opened in 2009 for archeology studies.

Archaeological studies are something I admire. Because they need to be very sensitive about this. Many of you may have heard of it. These excavations require a very long process. Digging isn't just about picking and shoveling. Here, they also do the digging with a brush.

There is an ongoing excavation work in the middle of the theater. The place where the study was carried out was covered with a blue cover. Shade is necessary for those who work here. We had an umbrella with us while we were visiting this place. The sun was really hot.

Ongoing archaeological work.

I am happy to show you the ancient city of Myra. Because I am transferring these beautiful places to many people. I hope you enjoyed this trip. I can't wait to share my many more ancient city tours with you.

Your support and comments are important to me. Thanks for visiting my post. See you in the next post.

Stay Healthy. Goodbye.
