Resident Evil 4 of Gamecube
This could apply to the PS2 as well, because they games were nearly identical. I want to focus on the Gamecube though because as far as the systems available at the time are concerned, I feel as though the cube was likely the least awesome. RE 4 was a pretty fantastic game though.

Also the Gamecube didn't generally have rated "M" games and the system sort of looked like a kids system. Nintendo had also failed to gather much of the market share and when RE4 was originally released in 2005, it was a Gamecube exclusive that was ported to PS2 a massive 9 months later. Obviously this resulted in many people purchasing a Gamecube just to be able to play the latest Resident Evil game.

The zombie aspect of RE games in the past was a starting to wear thin on fans and it was kind of nice that Capcom listened and instead changed things up with your first encounter with the baddies is to find out that they are just crazed villagers rather than mindless zombies.
The very first encounter is actually very difficult, as you must focus on avoiding them because there are just too many of them for you to kill them all. They also seem to replenish in numbers and it is only after a bell is sounded that they all disperse.
It really is terrifying particularly once the chainsaw dude gets involved.
That beginning was just one of the most intense intros a game has ever had in my opinion and is worthy of a video
Now this guy does it really intelligently because he has clearly been there before, but your initial run in the game will not be so pleasant as you madly scramble from building to building avoiding chainsaw men.
You later discover that the people aren't actually upset with you, they are under the spell of some sort of mind control that is being performed by some cult that is just as creepy as the crazy ass villagers

The cult is the entire reason why Leon is there. The president's daughter was kidnapped by this cult and he is being sent in to retrieve her. It is unclear why Leo is sent alone but that is the way they decide to do it.
This game was a great addition to the Resident Evil's already fantastic library. I would argue that things went downhill in the next two games only to redeem themselves with the latest RE game, which also kind of steers away from zombies. It seems that whenever the game gets too zombiefied, it suffers. At least that is what I think.
hey a fellow Gamecube fan! I loved this game and thought it started out great with that mob scene in the first town. It kind of forced you to "git gud" pretty fast but then after the first town the game got much easier for a while.
i never finished the game, but to be fair I had a lot going on in my life when it was released such as partying... i mean going to college.
