Day 2 - RV Living -1st World Problems
The Train!
I spent my first full day in the RV and the number one issue is not coming from the RV itself it comes from nearby train tracks several times a day and night also. TOOT, Toot... I've lived near train tracks before and I know you get used to it, but for now each train horn startles me and gives me a little adrenaline rush. It is loud! I know I will adapt, and if I don't that is the beauty of the RV is if you don't like the location change it.
Storage - Dishes
There is more storage than I originally thought, you just have to be creative and organized, even with that I've had to send a lot of my clothing back to storage. However, it has been a long time since I was into fashion, I've decided to keep mostly jeans, shorts and some yoga pants, and simple tee-shirts, along with one dress and 2 dinner level outfits. There was actually some relief in this decision as it just makes everything simple. There is a shared laundry facility, but I don't want to be spending a lot of time in there. Nor do I want to be shifting through my entire wardrobe to find something to wear each day.
I am going to have to change my grocery shopping habits, because until now I like to buy in bulk and limit my shopping trips. Although the fridge isn't tiny it is not what I am used to. The freezer is tiny!
Counter space is tiny and it also ads and element of simple cooking. So far I've managed to put together reasonable dinners.
The good news is I can clean the RV from end-to-end in a very short period of time.
The Park - Neighbors
The park is in a rural setting and is small and quiet. We opted for quiet and simple instead of amenities. There are 10 sites of which only two are empty, The other residents we've met so far consist of some Avista workers who literally come here to sleep after work and go home on the weekends. Also there is a couple from Yakima who keep their trailer here year round and stay it in on weekends as a vacation home type of setup. The park is comfortable safe feeling and extremely quiet. Which allows me to work from the RV without a lot of distractions.
Mood
I'm optimistic this is going to work. Having my own mattress, my computer and my husband makes this adventure feel kind of fun. I don't have all the details worked out and I still have a pile of things to decide what to do with. Overall I'm feeling pretty good.
I also realize as I type this how spoiled I sound. I know they are first world problems, but then again... I am a first world person.

Sucks about the train but other than that it doesn't sound too bad. Maybe you could call the train company and ask them to use their horn less?
It's not bad at all. I doubt the train master would cater to me, but gosh that would be nice.
Never hurts to try. They might not ever get any complaints about it.
I'm not sure if this a long term thing for you or not, but you may be surprised by the positive changes it has on your current lifestyle. I think there is a lot of benefit around the minimalist lifestyle and you may find that you continue to adopt some of these forced changes if you end up leaving the RV.
For now it is temporary, but if we don't end up hating it..... to be continued..
I agree there are some nice benefits so far.
See what you do is you swaddle a watermelon in a blanket and put it in a baby stroller. Leave the stroller by the train tracks with a sign that says "Sleeping Baby". That way any train that comes by wont use their horn because it might wake the baby.
Living off Steempower :) Nice !!!
Oh no, I'm not living on my steem. I power it up mostly.
I had to laugh about the train! Our first park had a train track running behind it, and I will never forget the first time it went by...my husband and I looked at each other and said, "of course, there's a train track nearby" haha Just our luck!
It is amazing the storage in those things, isn't it? I did the same thing with my clothes and opted for simple and comfortable. Looking at your photo makes me miss that life a little.
You sound like you're starting to settle in just fine :)
It's going to be just fine! I hope you and your husband are doing well!
I'm glad :) Thanks so much; we are hanging in there!
Seems like a temporary solution(?)
Pretty cool thing to be able to move your house when you feel like tou are sort of bored of the “neighborhood”
Sounds like a cool Rv actually. I hope it’s not like Jessie’s from Breaking bad!
Just kidding, hope everything goes as planned
haha, the one next to us look's a little like Jesse's. haha.
I missed the explanation but... why did you move to an RV? I hope you adapt and enjoy this new chapter of your life!!!
We sold our last house and were having a hard time deciding where to buy the next one. So, we are living in it until we decide where to live
Mmm, I guess the "where" problem isn't so big now. Greetings
So, this is a great time for me to get out a rant I’ve had bottled up for a few years... I love the idea of the RV lifestyle (the idea, haha, I’ve never actually done it). The idea of being mobile and having a small footprint with few possessions and closer to nature really appeals to me. The “privacy of the nomadic lifestyle” is this assumption that somehow got stuck in my head. But then you see the actual campsites, and without fail, at every one I have seen you are right on top of each other! How does a lifestyle centered around independence and solitude get stuck with the vehicular equivalent of living in a townhouse?! Am I just way off base with what RV-ing is all about? Did I over romanticize the “rugged frontierism” of it all? Because from everything I’ve seen, campsites are trailer parks on wheels. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, it’s just so at odds with how I envisioned they would be.
< /rant>
I enjoyed the rant. There are many ways to RV live. (I know because I have been reading about it.) :)
Some buy a private piece of property, for us having water, sewer, garbage, internet... Those are all still things we want. I guess it depends on your ability to live simple. This is pushing it for me! :)
My grandparents did it for a few years in the driveway of my aunt’s house. It was basically a detached inlaw suite. Agreed, there are plenty of setups. I wanted to do it this year in a rental for a Maine vacation but it was just too expensive. One day, though!
One of my daughters lived in on in our driveway while they were moving. For about 3 months while they were moving.
Nice photo of the train. Glad that you are optimistic @whatsup. Look at it as an adventure. This too shall pass!
Yes, it will pass! :) I am already feeling pretty good about things.
Good for you. We have to keep you happy so that you can continue to help us be encouraged.
You find a lot of positive sides on the first day. That's a very good sign.
And like I said yesterday you find a good source for your future posts.
Keep them coming. We waiting for more and we're eager to learn from your experience.
Yes, I think it is going to be okay. :) Such a relief!
