LETTER "S" CONTINUED

SPIDERS AND SPIDER WEBS

This is a continuation of spiders and their webs from my last post. Here is the link if you would like to read it: https://steemit.com/nature/@whatisnew/my-abc-s-of-nature-series-letter-s-continued-part-36

These photos are going to start out tame but the photos at the end might freak you out.

TRASHLINE ORB WEAVER SPIDER WEB

I found this one near the top of my neighbor's Pine tree.

I do not have photos of the Trashline Spider but I do have photos of three different webs.

The only species of the Trashline Orb Weaver Spider found in the U.S. is the Allocyclosa Bifurcae. It is a very small spider that measures 1/4 inch long. The color of an adult female is silvery or white.

This Trashline Orb Weaver Spider Web was found in my neighbor's garden.

Just like other orb weaver spiders, the Thrashline Orb Weaver Spider builds a circular web; however, theses spiders decorate their web with trash. There is controversy about this "line of trash." Some say it is used as camouflage for the spider; others say it is used to deter predators, and others say it helps to increase their prey capture. It has also been said that it aids in mating.

This "trash" contains remains of old prey, new prey, and small pieces of plants; leaf and stem fragments and tiny flower parts. Sometimes these trash lines contain egg sacs. These lines hang vertically down in the middle of the web. The spider sits in the middle of the trash line and blends in very well. Every object in the trash line is about the same size of the spider.

This Trashline Orb Weaver Spider Web was found hanging from my neighbor's butterfly pole.

This is a close-up of the trash line.

Here are two photos of a very large different spider web that I found on my next door neighbor's pine tree. I couldn't get a good photo of it because it was so far away and the wind was blowing.

I am not sure about this next photo. I did read that many different spiders will wrap their uneaten prey in silk and save it for later. Maybe that is what this is. It sure is spooky looking. I found this in my next door neighbor's garden.

I have eight photos of my next and final web. Just wait until you see what is in it. I will post them right away because I really need to finish with these spiders and their webs. I had nightmares about them last night. Thanks for looking!

That web was so big that it is very possible for a bird or bat to get trapped.

Hihihi... Thanks too... If something big gets trapped there, please upload a shot of it!! ^^

This web is long gone but there will probably be many more in the future. And if anything gets trapped in any of the webs, I will definitely try to get a photo and post it. Hoping later than sooner! LOL!
