Artwork inspired by different mediums of artwork

in #art6 years ago

I know a lot of musicians who are obsessed with listening to music, a lot of writers who are obsessed with reading, a lot of painters who are obsessed with other painters. Sure I have my fair share of musicians who move me to the point where I can't stop listening and get giddy to hear their new music, I also keep some distance from music and the music scene.

One reason I do this is that despite music being the form of art which I've always most resonated with is that music is just a means of expression, and as much as it comes most natural to me, I see no reason to box myself inside of it. Another reason is that I do not want my music to draw too much from any particular musical artist. Being original isn't the only goal here; keeping some distance from music allows me to really find my own voice and know who I am as an artist. It allows me space to feel comfortable creating.

When I'm writing music I'm not listening to music. When I'm working on a novel, I'm not reading others novels, but I still manage to get lots of input.

My songs are often inspired by imagery, especially imagery of the mind, dreams, stories and the like. Sometimes I write a song after watching an interview between two people that inspire me or based on an experience I've had. I rarely put the energy I get from other musicians back into my music. Instead, the music I listen to turns into fuel to get through my work as a teacher and a member of society.

When I write stories, they are by and large influenced by the RPG's I've played as a kid and by films and television shows I've enjoyed. The first few novels I've started working on are inspired more by the lives of artists rather than by their artwork. The science fiction which I would like to complete after is more inspired by Final Fantasy than it is by Lord of the Rings or Star Wars.

As far as performing goes, I don't love the stage all that much. What really wants to make me play music is seeing other creative people creating along with my work, painting or making up a melody or spitting some rhymes. An audience just watching isn't all that exciting to me.

And so I love this crossover of styles and work. I know this is not unique by any means, so let me know, is your work inspired by other mediums too?

Messed up my previous comment haha, it was about how big an influence Final Fantasy was for me and how I found deep psychological and spiritual representations in the games, which are actually more of a literary, musical and visual piece of art than a game in many occasions.

Right? I think what makes so much Japanese media so popular all over the world is a kind of subconscious connection with many deep truths that most of the western world has forgotten. Japan's contribution to the collective consciousness is probably what drew me here :-D
Final fantasy 7-10 really showed me that I wasn't alone in some of my personal beliefs which I hadn't shared with anyone at that time

Yeah, specially Squall's existencialism was so relatable to at the time

Listened to "Mirrors" and absolutely loved it. Great trance inducing energy, it was a very nice ride!

Thanks for listening man! I should reshape the live version of that with the whole audience (of 8 people) jamming along

I'm an animator that is terrible at watching things XD

I'm...not actually sure what happened to my pet project. When I first realised my characters (who started out as fan characters) were actually from another universe and I actually thought I had more control than I do over anything, I really wanted to do an anime parody thing with superhumans with city levelling powers having planet destroying battles.

That got toned down quite a lot XD

And even now I know a lot of my framing is probably still influenced by Squaresoft/Enix games x_x
