I Have An Idea For Bots
So I only use steemit as my steem social so I apologize if a system like this is already in place. What if other steem social sites made a list of all bots, and the accounts that bots use, and made an algorithm so that their votes didn't effect what trends or not. People would still get the steem for the votes but that way the posts that are on the hot list would not be determined by bots. Only non-bot votes would count. There are only a few big bots and you can find the info on the steem bot site.
Steemit could still use bots so that they are viable and other sites could not so that content shows up differently. Then you would have options of what site you would want to use. The same with having ads on steemit and not other sites. This way we can make everyone happy.
Do you think that would work?
For me trending is not something I think about, I don't see it so out of sight out of mind. Once you are in the ecosystem then there are many such cases and mute is a good button for some of them. SMT effectively I feel want to go a step further and you will be isolated via community, although interfaces can already do this according to user preferrences so if I want to follow many many people or explore a tag I can check the default if someone I have muted or a bot has voted on a post I do not want to see it, I can go further and say I also do not want to see things my friends have muted - assuming I have checked reliable followers. Effectively for me this is what society does very well to exclude yet this does not seem to be something that the internet takes to easily , well not to the degree where you are actively saying nope those can go in the trash, it is far more inline with oh I just won't look that way but they better behave or I will cry as though they are stabbing me.
That is a thought!
I will have to admit I have only ever visited the trending page a dozen times, and 6 of those by accident ;)
The autovoters May get caught up in that algorithm and it would take a good amount constant tweaking to get it right and keep it there.
I stopped using bots a while ago too but still use steemit all the time when at home.
If you are a coder, start it up!

While some frontends are doing that already, the recent upgrade to Hivemind will also setup communities so that each can choose how “trending” will appear and thus take the bots influence away from that category if opted. Other has implemented a non weighted vote system that chooses the posts appearing on trending. However, there is still no consensus among everyone on the best route so it will take time for anything to make it to Steemit I think.
