On this day in 1944, Allied Forces landed in Normandy, France, in what would become the pivotal offensive of the Second World War. Commonly known as D-Day, this was the largest seaborne invasion in history and succeeded in turning the tide towards victory for the Allies.

This turning point was not wholly victorious, however, with an estimated 10,000 casualties within the Allied forces alone.
