Wenn sonst nix zu tun ist... / When there's nothing else to do...

Während ich verletzungsbedingt tatsächlich ein ganz klein wenig kürzer trete (also ich versuche vernünftig zu sein, ehrlich…) und nur wenig laufe oder Treppen steige (also gar nicht geht nicht, das müßt Ihr verstehen…) und kaum etwas Schweres bewege (also was heißt überhaupt schwer…: ist so ein kranker Retriever-Mix schwer??), habe ich etwas Zeit für dumme Gedanken ;-))

Okay, ernsthaft: ich nehme mir mehr Zeit für alles, sogar für mich. Mein Knie kommt täglich zwei Mal in den Genuß von 20 Minuten Behandlung mit kaltem Rotlicht und ich darf behaupten: einen so schnellen Heilungsfortschritt hätte ich nicht erwartet. Muß also wirklich was dran sein an dem Hexenwerk… Bleibt abzuwarten, ob es sich im gleichen Maße fortsetzt bis zur vollständigen Ausheilung. Ihr werdet es erfahren; für den Moment bin ich glücklich mit der Entwicklung und allem, was ich schon wieder problemlos machen kann.

Die anmoderierten dummen Gedanken sind tatsächlich auch gar nicht so arg dumm, nur eben nebensächlich. Wir konzentrieren uns seit Übernahme des Hofes vor zwei Jahren vorwiegend auf viele notwendige Hauptsachen. Die kleinen Extravaganzen bleiben derweil natürlicherweise liegen. Manchmal gibt es kurze Impulse in der Richtung, aber die verebben auch recht schnell wieder angesichts dringenderer Anliegen.

Einer dieser eher unausgegorenen Geistesblitze, die immer wieder beiseite geschoben werden, tauchte erstmals auf, als wir letztes Jahr den gebrauchten Transporter kauften. Den mochten und mögen wir sehr, weil er unsere Erwartungen mehr als erfüllt, schon wertvollste Dienste geleistet hat und sich als technisch sehr zuverlässig und robust erwiesen hat. Alles richtig gemacht. Schöner wird er durch all diese Vorzüge nicht. Nein, mir ist auch nicht wirklich wichtig, wie ein Auto äußerlich aussieht. Es muß funktionieren. Aber… Wir haben damals bereits geunkt: wenn uns die ganzen Kratzer und Beulen und der Rost doch 'mal stören, wird einfach der ganze Transporter zum Kunstwerk!

Ich bin vor ungefähr 30 Jahren einen Ford Explorer gefahren, den ich mir für teures Geld hatte ziemlich cool airbrushen lassen. In der Art hatte ich etwas vor Augen, als wir dieses „Anmalen“ jetzt bezüglich des Transporters überdachten. Allerdings sind Airbrush-Künstler heute noch deutlich kostspieliger als früher (schon allein die Sprühfarben kosten ein Vielfaches…) und nun ja. Ihr wißt schon. Eigentlich ist es ja egal, wie ein Auto aussieht.

So ganz weg war die fixe Idee trotzdem nie. Sie traf unter den Kindern und Enkeln insofern auf fruchtbaren Boden, als daß sich mindestens zwei begeisterte Sprayer gerne der Aufgabe widmen würden, Masterli (wie wir ihn liebevoll nennen ;-)) zu verschönern. In der Hoffnung, daß mit der Begeisterung auch eine gewisse Begabung einhergeht, habe ich mein Herz dieser Abwandlung meiner ursprünglichen Vorstellung geöffnet und mich auf die Perspektive eingelassen, demnächst in einem fahrenden Graffito unterwegs zu sein…

Das blieb im weiteren Verlauf unkonkret und vage, da von einem Motiv noch längst keine Rede war. Und nun kommen ein wenig Muße – siehe oben: ich versuche, mich zu schonen – und die Existenz diverser, vor 30 Jahren noch nicht relevanter KI‘s ins Spiel…: mit ein bißchen sorgfältiger Zuarbeit können die doch bestimmt gescheite Entwürfe erstellen für ein mögliches Design…?!

Herumgespielt hatte ich ja schon mit einigen Modellen. Ich gebe allerdings zu: oberflächlich, mangels echten Interesses. Dieses war nun aber auf einmal erwacht und ich habe mir zunächst überlegt, daß ich bei der Gestaltung in etwa dem treu bleiben möchte, das sich wie ein roter Faden durch mein Leben, meine Arbeit, meine Außendarstellung zieht. Richtig. Es muß definitiv einen weißen Raben geben im Wunschbild.

Eine passende Szenerie konnte ich auch relativ schnell imaginieren. Diese jetzt so zu beschreiben, daß eine KI versteht, was mir vorschwebt und das dann auch visuell umsetzt, erschien mir zunächst als recht kompliziert.

In meiner Vorgabe habe ich bereits die Kernaufgabe formuliert, eine Vorlage für ein Graffito als Karosseriedesign zu kreieren. Das eigentliche Motiv hatte ich vorerst grob umrissen und auf eine Fülle verschiedener Vorschläge und Ansätze gehofft. So kam es allerdings nicht. ChatGPT, den ich für den ersten Versuch auswählte, konfrontierte mich mit unzähligen Rückfragen. Von den Farbtönen über die genaue Positionierung am Fahrzeug, den Fahrzeugtyp, Haltung und Ausdruck des Raben, Blickwinkel und Perspektive bis hin zu möglichen 3D- oder Metallic-Effekten wollte das Tool absolut alles abklären. Und bot mir dann drei Entwürfe in verschiedenen Stilen an.

Tja. Nach dem ersten wollte ich nicht mehr weiter machen. Auch keine alternative KI ausprobieren. Hat mir einfach auf Anhieb super gut gefallen. Mein weiterer Vorstoß war dann die Frage nach der Art Vorlage, die ausgegeben werden könne. Und siehe da, auch hier erweist sich das Tool als erstaunlich flexibel. Es wäre möglich, eine Zeichnung als Bilddatei auszugeben, die seitenweise rasterartig ausgedruckt werden könnte und dann der 1:1 Übertragung auf das Fahrzeug diente. Ein Negativbild, das man als Dia auf das Fahrzeug projizieren könnte bzw. eine Folie zum gleichen Zweck oder aber eine Datei für eine Projektion mit dem Beamer – alles wählbar! Ich gebe zu, das hat mich dann doch echt beeindruckt.

Habe ich jetzt einem lebenden Künstler den Auftrag weggenommen bzw. vorenthalten? Ja und nein. Ja, ich habe mir aus finanziellen Gründen den Weg zu einem Kreativen erspart und mich an eine kostenlose und frei verfügbare KI gewandt. Und nein, ich hätte den Künstler nicht bezahlen können und daher ansonsten einfach alles beim Alten belassen. Mein Fazit wäre also: wenn ich nicht den Anspruch auf Exklusivität und die persönliche Handschrift eines ausgesuchten Designers habe, bietet sich mir eine Möglichkeit, mein direktes Umfeld zu verbessern, die ich ohne diese KI nicht gehabt hätte.

Ist das fair? Ich weiß es nicht. Mein Trost ist, daß die Ausführung immer noch in den Händen ambitionierter Menschen liegt. Daß es dadurch zu einer individuellen und unverwechselbaren Handarbeit wird.

Und zwar im kommenden Frühjahr. Da wir im Freien arbeiten müssen, sind wir auf stabil trockenes Wetter angewiesen. Und sooo dringend ist es ja nicht. Bis dahin können wir uns auf etwas Feines freuen und vielleicht doch noch ein wenig herumstricken am endgültigen Look. Rechnet also etwa im April mit dem Ergebnis… ;-))

Okay, seriously: I'm taking more time for everything, even for myself. My knee enjoys 20 minutes of cold red light treatment twice a day, and I can say that I didn't expect such rapid healing progress. So there must really be something to this witchcraft... It remains to be seen whether it will continue at the same rate until complete healing. You'll find out; for now, I'm happy with the progress and everything I can already do again without any problems.

The silly thoughts I mentioned at the beginning aren't actually that silly, just irrelevant. Since taking over the farm two years ago, we've been focusing mainly on the many necessary essentials. The little extravagances are naturally being left behind for now. Sometimes there are brief impulses in that direction, but they quickly fade away in the face of more urgent concerns.

One of these rather half-baked flashes of inspiration, which are always pushed aside, first appeared when we bought the used transporter last year. We liked it and still like it very much because it more than meets our expectations, has already provided invaluable services and has proven to be technically very reliable and robust. Everything done right. All these advantages don't make it any more stylish. No, I don't really care what a car looks like on the outside. It has to work. But... We already said at the time: if all the scratches, dents and rust start to bother us, we'll just turn the whole vehicle into a work of art!

About 30 years ago, I drove a Ford Explorer that I had airbrushed for a lot of money to make it look pretty cool. I had something like that in mind when we were considering ‘painting’ the car. However, airbrush artists are much more expensive today than they used to be (the spray paints alone cost a fortune...) and well, you know. Actually, it doesn't matter what a car looks like.

Nevertheless, the fixed idea never completely disappeared. It fell on fertile ground among the children and grandchildren, in that at least two enthusiastic graffiti artists would gladly devote themselves to the task of beautifying Masterli (as we affectionately call it ;-)). Hoping that enthusiasm would be accompanied by a certain amount of talent, I opened my heart to this modification of my original idea and embraced the prospect of soon being on the road in a moving graffito...

This remained vague and unspecific, as there was still no mention of a motif. And now a little leisure time has come along – see above: I'm trying to take it easy – and the existence of various AI's that were not relevant 30 years ago has come into play...: with a little careful preparation, they can surely create clever drafts for a possible design...?!

I had already played around with a few models. I admit, however, that this was superficial, due to a lack of genuine interest. But now this interest had suddenly been awakened, and I initially thought that I would like to remain true to the design that runs like a thread through my life, my work and my public image. Right. There definitely has to be a white raven in the ideal image.

I was also able to imagine a suitable setting relatively quickly. Describing it in such a way that an AI would understand what I had in mind and then translate it visually seemed quite complicated at first.

In my specifications, I had already formulated the core task of creating a template for a graffito as a car body design. I had roughly sketched out the actual motif and hoped for a wealth of different suggestions and approaches. However, that's not how it turned out. ChatGPT, which I chose for my first attempt, confronted me with countless questions. The tool wanted to clarify absolutely everything, from the colour tones to the exact positioning on the vehicle, the vehicle type, the raven's posture and expression, the angle and perspective, and even possible 3D or metallic effects. It then offered me three designs in different styles.

Well, after the first one, I didn't want to continue. I didn't even want to try an alternative AI. I just liked it right away. My next step was to ask about the type of template that could be output. And lo and behold, here too, the tool proves to be amazingly flexible. It would be possible to output a drawing as an image file that could be printed out page by page in a grid format and then used for 1:1 transfer to the vehicle. A negative image that could be projected onto the vehicle as a slide, or a transparency for the same purpose, or a file for projection with a beamer – everything is selectable! I admit, that really impressed me.

Have I now taken away or withheld a commission from a living artist? Yes and no. Yes, for financial reasons, I spared myself the expense of hiring a creative professional and turned to a free and freely available AI. And no, I wouldn't have been able to pay the artist and would therefore have simply left everything as it was. So my conclusion would be: if I don't have the claim to exclusivity and the personal signature of a selected designer, I have an opportunity to improve my immediate environment that I wouldn't have had without this AI.

Is that fair? I don't know. My consolation is that the execution is still in the hands of ambitious people. That this makes it an individual and distinctive piece of handiwork.

And that will be next spring. Since we have to work outdoors, we are dependent on stable, dry weather. And it's not that urgent. Until then, we can look forward to something nice and maybe do a little more knitting on the final look. So expect the result around April... ;-))
