Your Blog Readers Hate You. Oops! Why?

in #blog7 years ago (edited)

As a blogger, you probably don’t want your blog readers to hate you.

I know that there’s no such thing as bad press … if someone’s talking about you then they’re talking about you, no matter good or bad. But still…

Even though you want all that’s best for your readers you can still end up with a blog that people hate…

How come? Simply by doing these mistakes:

NOT STICKING ON YOUR NICHE

When you were first launching your blog you probably had a main idea for the whole thing and a plan on what you’re going to post. But with time your main goal stopped to be that visible and you switched to countless different ideas.

It’s only a matter of time before you start publishing photos of your breakfast or something…

Get back on track and start posting relevant content. Posting about every thing imaginable can work only for HIGHLY popular people.

TIPS

Although there are consequences on focusing on a particular niche like less traffic, less audience and low monetization opportunity there are also advantages of having a specific niche for your blog. It allows you to

  • Write Content Easily
since there are fewer people who ventured on your chosen niche, you wont find hard time writing and thinking if someone has already made an article of something.

  • Grow a Solid Audience
when you're on a particular niche, reader-writer connection is really not a hard thing to do since people reading your blog are only those who knows what you are writing.

  • Expand Your Knowledge
by providing your reading niche-related topics, you will become an authority on the topic

POSTING WHENEVER YOU WANT

It’s really easy to get distracted and start posting irregularly, and I mean extremely irregularly… Like one week you publish three posts, and then you don’t post anything for two months, then you’re back to three posts per week.

No matter what you think, your readers don’t like this. For instance, would you buy a newspaper that has no understandable publishing schedule? Of course not.

TIPS

Plan your content in advance. Publish as often as you like, but make it consistent. Scheduling your articles will help you

  • Attract more readers and establish your authority on your chosen niche.

  • Readers will know when is the best time to visit your blog for valuable information.

  • Avoid beating deadlines on your other assignments. You will have more time perhaps for yourself or to your loved ones.

USING PARAGRAPHS THAT ARE TOO LONG

Writing really long paragraphs can work if you’re writing a book. For any other purpose, it doesn’t. Reading long blocks of text simply doesn’t work on a computer screen.

Always aim to make your point in a maximum of 5 lines of text, then move to the next paragraph.

Each paragraph should be able to present a strong point on its own. I’m not saying that every paragraph has to be perfect, but when you have this goal in mind, you will inevitably produce content that’s a lot more readable.

TIPS

Here are a few reasons why having shorter paragraphs will make your readers like you more.

  • People Just Scan and Do Not Read
If a reader is welcome with a long list of long paragraphs, the tendency of not pushing to finishing is very close to reality.

  • It is More Engaging
Shorter paragraphs are easy to read thus it encourage someone to read further.

  • Less Chances of Rredundancy
Writing a lengthy story is not a bad idea but putting them in long paragraphs will likely confuse you on the process and parts of your story will most likely be written again unintentionally.

HAVING TOO MANY ADS

I know that you want to monetize your blog in one way or the other, but publishing a banner EVERYWHERE is not a good way of doing things…

Ads can bring you some good profits, but only when you plan everything out, pick your ad spots carefully, and then split test them against other possibilities.

TIPS

The main lesson here is not to jump on every new opportunity some internet marketers point out. Just because there’s a lot of popups, pop-unders, pop-exits, and pop-somethings on the internet, doesn’t mean that you should use every one of them.

Aside from that, having too many ads on your blog does not always guarantee best results. Tendencies are, you might loose some good readers and possible followers

USING BAD HEADLINES AND NOT RESEARCHING YOUR POSTS

Some people can write a post right away, they only need an idea. If you’re not Seth Godin, however, you’re much better off researching the topic first.

Your readers can really tell whether you wrote something after browsing the internet for a while searching for relevant information, or whether it’s a result of a couple of minutes of sitting around and putting random words together.

Stupid headlines are another thing… The perfect situation is when you craft a headline that conveys the main message your post brings in a small, concise form.

The headline should give the main benefit, introduce some facts, and provide a reason why a reader would want to read your post.

(I know, the headline I’m using here isn’t perfect … but it got you to read the post, didn’t it?)

TIPS

It is really not the best idea to just come up with something not good for your readers or else they will turn you down. A little research will do a lot, in this way...

  • you will be able to have a deeper understanding of your topic

  • you will learn new things thus expands your knowledge on the subject

  • you will become an expert on the subject as well

ATTACKING PEOPLE IN COMMENTS

Believe it or not, some people still do this…

Here’s the story. When you happen to write a controversial article, some people will naturally enjoy it, but some will naturally not enjoy it at all. Those people are very likely to show their frustration through comments.

As a blogger, you can’t allow others to provoke you easily. No matter what happens you shouldn’t attack people in the comments. Remember, nothing angers a troll more than being ignored.

Simply. Don’t. Respond.

These are just a few of the many reasons why your blog is not converting and started to loose readership. They say that prevention is way better than cure, right? start to avoid these common mistakes. Trust me, it will paid off.

I have one final question for you to end this post with:

What would look good as the reason #7 on this list? Feel free to share.
