Teeny tiny brekky dishes in Malacca

If you are a Dim Sum lover, this post is totally, for you! Malacca is well-known for its food. Going there mainly just for eating is probably not that bad of an idea. We ate a lot when we're there. Most of the food is good. The one and only dim sum we had while in Malacca was also an epic meal! A dim sum place hidden on the back road of Jonker Walk, Low Yong Moh Dim Sum Restaurant.

One thing I love so much about Malaysia, the multiple ethnic groups that exist in the country. You know what that means, so many kinds of different food due to all the many varieties of people exist! Chinese influences are also pretty big over there.

That's why having some dim sum for breakfast and sip a small little cups of hot Chinese tea just couldn't go wrong..

Low Yong Moh Dim Sum Restaurant

This place is hidden on the back road of the famous street like, Jonker Street. The owner of a hostel I was staying at didn't even know the place exist. The back road has a few different Chinese temples and small shops all along. Very chill and interesting just to wander around during the day. *Super duper hot out though

We went there when it's almost 12 or sometime around that. The restaurant was already almost empty as I guess, they really do go there for breakfast The place opens from 6 AM on! Luckily, there were still many types of dim sum left a bit in the big steamer baskets here and there so we gathered whatever they still had. They all looked good anyways so why not :)

Dim Sum at Low Yong Moh

Dim sum a Chinese cuisine prepared as small bite-sized portions of food served in small steamer baskets or on a small plates. It's usually served with tea and together form a full tea brunch

Once we arrived, a staff right away came to get the drink order. It's Dim Sum place so of course, we went for a pot of hot Chinese tea. Nice natural flavour as it is, nothing added.

At Low Yong Moh, we had a chance to try quite a few types. Pretty much what one dim sum place would serve. Dumplings, meat balls, fish balls, bao (buns), stuffed tofu and etc. Wait, there are a few super duper dishes we're like, 'Dude, let's just go for another round of this!'

Now let's get into the 'Gimme some more' dishes there at Low Yong Moh Dim Sum

Bak Chang

Zongzi or Bak Chang is a traditional Chinese rice dish made of glutinous rice stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in bamboo leaves

I'm not exactly sure if I could call this Bak Chang. Though, the dish itself and the taste of it is exactly that.. It's just not wrapped in the leaves as it usually is. I personally think the dish is too sweet and almost too heavy. Every time I take a bite, always wanted a sip of that hot tea! It's delicious though. Kevin loves it a lot and he's the one wanted to grab one or even two more.

We went to a place that serve another type of these the other day in Malacca, Nyonya Bakchang. That one is so pretty and tasty!

Ho Mok

Amok or Ho Mok is a thick coconut cream mixed with curry paste, herbs, meat/fish make it a curry steamed in banana leaves

This one is a great contrast to all the salty and sweet dishes as it got that spiciness in it. Some places, like this one, grill Ho Mok instead of steaming it. Each method gives a bit different texture to the food but hey, both smell good and taste great!

Tiger bites pork

This one is quite funny how they call it and even funnier if you know the story behind it. Compared to those normal pork buns that the dough covers the whole chunk of stuffing, this type of bun still got a hole so you see the meat inside. Some say it looks like a mouth with meat so as easy as that, they call it 'Tiger bites pork'.

Low Yong Moh Dim Sum makes it good. The bun is soft and I love the big piece of pork belly. Imagine chewing it, the salty fat spreads and combine with the light sweetness of the bun.. Hmmm you, I wanted a lot more of that!

Salted eggs Lava Buns

Whoa! You just couldn't go wrong with salted eggs!

This one is fun! It can be sweet. It can be savoury. The yellow-orange-ish bun with the sweet and creamy filling made with salted eggs. To be fair, many places make it good and so does Low Yong Moh Dim Sum Restaurant. It's already the perfect combination itself, I would say.

Though, if you don't know what you're doing, it's not going to turn out good. Here, the buns are so nice and soft. Once you tear it open, it doesn't really, like, a fancy lava opening kind of bun but the salted egg cream has a balance taste of sweet and salty. I wouldn't mind the second bun!

After all these teeny-tiny breakfast plates at Low Yong Moh Dim Sum, we were stuffed! Another delicious Chinese meal in Malacca, Malaysia. For sure, satisfying. Other dishes were fine but the last few mentioned, I would totally love to go back for more if there's any chance.

After this epic dim sum breakfast / brunch.. Not sure if it's the heat of Malacca or the saltiness in the food that made us so dang thirstea oops, thirsty. Just right around the corner, there's this cute little wheeled drink shop selling Chinese herb drink. If you come across it or ones look like it, give it a try. It's super duper refreshing and hopefully have tons of benefits from the herbs :)
