100% Homemade ! Dessert for Chinese Spirit Festival 🇨🇳
Another year has passed and now it's that time of the year 'Spirit Festival (สารทจีน) 🇨🇳' The Chinese influenced Festival in Thailand. The day that you would pray and give some food to the spirits around you / your house. Sounds crazy for some of you, doesn't it? It's a culture and we might as well just accept and learn :)
One time a year, we make these Chinese desserts called, 'Kanom Tian (ขนมเทียน)' and 'Kanom Kheng (ขนมเข่ง)' and sell them. Our customers use these desserts to make offerings to the spirits. Believe it or not, we do it all by hands! Our place is soooo popular for it too, you will see!
Grandma made banana leaf containers
Step mom mixed the flour and sugar (Secret recipe!)
I put on a bit of vegetable oil on all containers
Auntie poured in the mixed flour
All the cups were being steamed
Put some red dots on them
There! Ready to be weighed up and sell!
We're all busy this morning packing and selling.
Most of the boxes you see are pre-ordered. We have been selling for years so we're pretty well-know and popular for it (Not even kidding :D) More than 300 kilograms sold!
After you make the offering to spirits, you sure could eat them yourself. It's soft and firm. Some types have stuffing and some not. Sweet coconut or salty soy and pork. They are all fatty but so good. It's not just we would have lots of great stuff to eat but also, the fact that we're all helping each other in the family and keep the family business running for years.. I always love this time of the years !
