Captcha and why Steemit isn't implementing it

Captcha the easy to keep bots out

Hey guys, i've noticed a massive bot problem on posting(and upvoting). Yes there are ways people are dealing with it like automoted down voting bots - fight bots with bots ;)

BUUUUT.... why not just add CAPTCHA for posting reasons ? I've created many websites in my life and Captcha is very easy to integrate into a website.

Conclusion or TL:DR

To solve one of Steemit's biggest problems(Imo) they just need to add a Captcha for posting storys and comment on already created stories. I haven't found out a way to solve the upvote bots besides just banning them xD

Does CAPTCHA charge a fee for their services? I've always been curious. If this is the case, it may not work with the block chain, but I'm sure someone could develop something of the sort!

Well i've used it for free on my websites but for such a large scale im not sure. But i agree some one just needs to develop it even :)

While it sounds like a good idea in theory, Captcha will actually do very little to stop bots. It will only work on bots which go though the Steemit front page, but the vast majority of bots (if not all) post directly to the blockchain, and so will never even get to the captcha. It will just slow down posting for the human users.

aaaaah okay thanks for this

The creators of SteemIt are not opposed to bots, so they don't want a system that excludes all bots.

Give it a year and this place is going to be overrun by them and it will deter people from visiting if you have 100 bots posting crap on peoples posts. So something does need to be created.

Yeah, things are being created. You should check through the recent posts by the founders about this topic.

Captcha will not work in this case because bots can write directly to the blockchain. The captcha would only work for people accessing the blockchain through a website.

isnt posting on steemit or on a comment on steemit accessing the blockchain through a website?

Yes it is, but that does not prevent anybody from accessing the blockchain directly.

Hi! This post has a Flesch-Kincaid grade level of 9.1 and reading ease of 72%. This puts the writing level on par with Michael Crichton and Mitt Romney.
