Planning for spring

in #homesteading8 years ago (edited)

Waiting for my camera to charge. I hope that's all that's wrong with it. It takes pictures, but doesn't have enough power to download the pictures I took this morning. :( I'm gonna have a hissy if I have to buy a new camera.

It's been a day!! Some days i wonder about myself. Frustration is putting it mildly. Well the new camera is on its way, and now the other one is working. Deep breath

I took a walk around this morning after chicken chores. The weather has been so warm and sunny lately, I'm feeling a little guilty for not getting out there and doing more work. Well, not that guilty. It is winter, I am in hibernation mode, don't bother me.

Last summer was a total fail with the gardens. We had the grasshopper invasion from hell. I grew some lovely pepper plants, cabbage, brocolli, tomatoes. They were totally munched to the ground. We refuse to use poison on our property. I had used a product a few years back that made the hopsockers sterile and they devoured themselves. We didn't get that started early enough this year. What the grasshoppers didn't eat, the range cows did. As you can see, I have some major fence repairs coming in the spring. There were 2 cows and a young bull that missed their ride out of here in October. They knocked down a few fences before the owners made it back to round them up. I was so ticked to go out and see what they did to my garden gate.

This spot will be the sight of the new blue berry patch. Everyone in this household switched over to the keto diet last summer. Dr. Burg and Dr. Group have some very interesting lectures about this form of eating. needless to say, our grocery bills have certainly decreased over time. There are a lot of foods we don't eat much of any more, like the belladonna family of foods. These include : Tomatoes, tomatillo, potato, egg plant, peppers of all kinds. Backing up and cutting out growing what we just don't eat anymore. This makes 1 entire garden space open for something we will eat. BLUEBERRIES. I'm going to splurge this year and buy the 3 year old plants, because I am impatient and don't want to wait 3 years for berries. I think 6 plants will be a very fruitful patch. We may even be able to sell a few to neighbors and friends.

LOOKY at what our bee keeper friend Butch brought by a couple days ago. Our neighbor let him put his bee boxes up on his pasture land. He doesn't have cows to mess with the hives, the bear did take a look at them though. They had electric fence up around the hives for protection. Talk about abundance! WOW This honey will last a life time! I use it very rarely, but do enjoy it. It's so pretty in the jars. Thank you Butch and David.

You're VERY welcome!!! Keep on contributing to the community!

I just can't wait for spring when all the gardens will be flourishing- so exciting!!

I'm not sure what mother nature is up to this year. Here is a pic of last year. this is @fishyculture behind the blower.

You can see from the garden shots what we have this year. She was blowing the sidewalk to the house.

Wow. The cows really did a number on your gate! We like blueberries too but I don't think they will do well in a tropical country. I am having camera troubles too but I think I can fix mine.

cows are to big for me. They can mush ya without even trying. I was peeved for sure. In the spring when the ground is ready, I'll dig a hole for another corner post and get it straightened out. :) I guess I will have two cameras now. The new one is a 20megapixal the one giving me fits is a 7.2. Small step up.

So much in common. We have a cow farm next to us but a forest separates us so even if they did get out I doubt they’d make it to our place.. doesn’t stop the noise or the smell though. Also we used to get honey wholesale from a guy who had his bees on our property. Most importantly we about 10 acres of blueberries which is our main business.16CC0629-A056-4724-8E60-0FFC2CE58F2C.jpeg
