The Plan - Five Minute Freewrite
The Plan
She krept into the dark livingroom while her husband snored on the couch. His snore was interrupted and she froze. Time crawled as she held her breath, it was not smart to let him wake up and see her there, fully dressed with shoes on. The kids, both under five slept quietly in their room just feet away in rickety bunk beds.
When her husband's snoring resumed she made her way to the end table and pulled a few Camel cigarettes from his pack. It had been years since she smoked, her go to many years before she quit had been Newport menthols. She pocketed a lighter from several littering the table hoping it would light. In her pocket was the note, "I need a ride to town tomorrow. I have an interview. Love Jan."
She had a plan she'd decided on to leave, but it was risky, really risky, but she was becoming bold.
She tiptoed to through the door into the warm summer air with the smokes and the note and her dreams of leaving once and for all. The walk was short and the moon was high.
Everyone was sleeping at her best friend's house, she left the note on her friend's car and walked back home slowly. Only the hot glow of her cigarette marked her passage alone on the moonlit road.
