Memories of Gramma - a Freewrite

Gramma wore her shawl like a queen wears a crown. Always cold, it was a second skin for her.

My cousin and me would spend the night and stay in the attic bedroom. Gramma would climb the creaking steps and deliver fortification in the form of homemade leaf cookies. The cookies were perfect leaves with cream cheese filling. She'd bring tall glasses of milk and sometimes homemade popcorn balls, too.

My cousin and me would toss laundry down the laundry chute and run to the basement to see it in a heap. We were "helping" Gramma and it was so much fun.

Gramma was tall and thin and a survivor of the depression so she saved everything and reused it all. Bread bags were used for storage and margarine tubs stacked high in the cupboards.

Gramma put away most of her fruits and vegetables, sewed the most beautiful, warm quilts and crocheted mittens for all of the grandchildren. Sometimes one thumb was longer than the other, but we loved her handmade gifts as much as we loved her.
