A Desert Journey
Alone
A dry, desert wind blows.
My skin, hot,
tongue cleaves the roof
of my mouth.
Mournful sounds of night; hunters
comb forgotten sand.
My skin pricks like sagauro
burned by the day's sun.
Shoes worn down by wandering.
My heart,
a dustbowl of dreams
hallucinating
when land was lush beneath my feet
the air, sweet
and pain and loss
never visited my thoughts.
I shed all which weigh me
as a wolf sheds its coat
or stag his antlers.
Forging on drains more
as hope propels me.
Ever searching for that oasis
where green appears
from nowhere
and cool water
teases my lips
easing calloused feet.
Life's blisters fester
arousing my reserves.
When I drink,
I drink deeply.
The moon a brilliant orb,
light to weary bones.
I remember
you always leave the light on,
every journey has a destination
as long as tomorrow comes.

I finally know what it feels like to be all alone in a desert without having to actually experience it myself, thanks to you. Now if you will excuse me, I need to drink some water before I travel to my next destination. This poem is beautiful @wandrnrose7! : )

You took me right back to the dry creek bed in the Valley of Fire where I saw a set of bird tracks and the slippery tracks of a sidewinder.
