The Greatest Poem Ever Written
A man, a poet, optimistic and young
Desiring to write the greatest poem ever written
Smitten with words
More in love with himself
He wrote to be better than anyone else
He worked to be the best
Comparing himself to the greats
Even he knew...
Somewhere inside his mind,
He wasn't better than the greats.
Writing and thinking and living and writing
Poetry didn't consume his life
His desire to be the best took over
He wrote and wrote and wrote
Poetry that was never the best
At the end, the man died of regret
Now what is the lesson, what can we learn?
Strive to be the best you can be
Expect the best from yourself
Leave the rest up to history.

Perhaps another answer is to write for the simple joy of self expression. For love of the beauty of nature, or the painful complexities and absurdities of observed mankind. For the satisfaction of a poetic resolution to our knotted thoughts. Another journey inside of self is perhaps reward enough.
