RE: Sully: A reasonably good film that could've been a short

Definitely worth a watch imo. With regards to Sully in real life, he "logically" became a bit of a hero after this event, and at some point testified in congress about the horrible working circumstances for airline pilots these days (and the negative effects that has on their ability to handle serious issues).

I remember a conversation with a pilot (not American, he worked for some European airline, and had a compensation package you would associate with a pilot), and he joked about that: being a pilot is fairly easy, and you are extremely overpaid for what is 99.9% of the times a fairly easy run off the mill task. but over your career, 1 or 2 times, you will hold your life and the lives of your passengers in your hands. THAT's what you are paid for.

I know a pilot of 30 years and he once told me that basically everything the plane does, it does automatically and you aren't even terribly involved in the process. He also told me that the required simulation training to keep your "license" or whatever it is called, was much more difficult than flying any actual plane. It's good that they have this though, for the 1 or 2 times, like you mentioned, that the unthinkable actually happens.
