A short story on how my day went at our cassava farm. Part one.
As we all know cassava is a vegetable, it is very nutritious and it contains carbohydrates, although it is not advisable to eat unprocessed cassava as it contains cyanide, which is toxic to our digestive system. Cassava comes in various types. We have the sweet cassava and we have the bitter cassava. Cassava is a very important raw material in the agricultural sector as it is being used to produce varieties of products.
such as;
• Garri
• Tapioca (grinded cassava)
• Bread
• French fries etc...
In most cases people use this cassavas to feed animals, in manufacturing of medicines, fabrics, and even for making bio-ethanol for fuel. Having heard so much about cassavas, let me now share with you my journey at our cassava farm.
Today has been one hell of a day. last night, our dad told us that we were going to the village the following day to cultivate cassava. I was like, really?, we all thought he was joking not until this morning, we embarked on a journey to the village. My village is a 30minutes drive from town. we left around 9:30am and we got here 10:00am dot.
I was actually expecting to see a very large farm but guess what?. it wasn't that big. it was a small farm but yet the work we did here was tedious. On reaching here we unpacked our stuff, brought out our shovel, machete and every other thing we were going to use for the farm work. Unfortunately for us the ground was very hard and the cassavas were stucked inside, we had to dig and pull to be able to remove atleast one Cassava, someone like me that's not used to farm work, there was this particular cassava that gave me stress, but i was able to pull it at last.
After we were done harvesting the cassava, my dad tilted the soil, so he could be able to plant new ones, after which he fertilized the soil with animal dung and cassava peels. then we gathered up the cassavas that we had harvested and we took it for peeling, Yes, we want to prepare Garri with the cassavas.
