Sora Yori mo Tooi Basho
Dealing with existential angst, a high-school girl quartette finds a way to join the civilian expedition to Antarctica. This was a surprise for me. Contemporary real-world adventure is not a common anime genre. In fact, this may be the first anime I've seen that has done this. This anime speaks to me in it's primary thesis– that to travel in heart and mind, a good way to start, is to travel in body and space. Like many anime series, the story is about moving beyond adversity to find internal agency through interaction with people and the world. Something I've miserably failed at thanks to my extreme case of Otome Kokoro. Feeling black after being upstaged by fictional anime girls~... I've just been writing about the deep half of Sorayori, but it's also very fun and features the Power of Friendship, along with the unique premise. Give it a watch!
