A Narrow View of Maslow’s Thoughts

in Project HOPE3 years ago (edited)

Hello guys, I'm Volkan. This is my first post in the Project Hope community and I would like to mention one scientist that I believe is very important.

We are all human, we are strong, we are clever, we are the boss of the world, we manage other living and non-living materials in the world, we are at the top of the food chain, no one can challenge us. In short, we are the rulers of this world.

Despite all this, human needs are many. There are things we often need, there are always things we need, and there are things we rarely need. Even this sentence is actually 'How can a being that needs so much be the ruler of the world?' raises the question. But that will be the subject of another article.

In fact, today I'm going to talk to you about a scientist who studied and classified human needs hierarchically and how he classified needs. The name of this scientist is Abraham Maslow.

Maslow's hierarchy of needs is divided into 5 main categories:

Physiological Needs: Hunger, thirst and similar basic vital needs

Need for Security: Protection from dangers caused by external factors

Social Needs: Belonging, love, acceptance, social life, etc.

Need for Value/Dignity: Status, achievement, reputation, recognition

Self-Actualization: Development, successful completion of a task, creativity

There are two important rules here.

  1. A person cannot move to the upper level without completing the developments in the lower level. In other words, a person cannot satisfy the need for security at the upper level without satisfying his physiological needs.

  2. For a lower level need, higher level needs can be abandoned. For example, if a person is hungry (1st step), he may go to find food by putting himself in danger (2nd step).

By looking at this chain of rules, we can better understand why some countries do not raise quality artists, scientists or athletes. Because sportsmanship, artistry or being a scientist can be realized with the self-development step (5th step). Unfortunately, it is very difficult for people in countries that have not been able to achieve the first and second steps to reach the top.

Of course, no theorem alone is enough to explain man and humanity, I know that. All theorems contribute to science, albeit a little, and we get to know ourselves and our environment thanks to the developing science. Maslow's hierarchy of needs should be looked at from this perspective.

Thank you for taking the time to read...

Many times people see the needs of the human being as things that have no importance, ignoring this beautiful pyramid and that makes us more human and wiser every day, to know what we are really able to need and are not simply beliefs or culture.
thank you for your contribution

Yes, I totally agree. That's why I love scientists. They draw guiding maps for normal people like us and they help us.

Within these same needs, the hierarchy is created: the man who owns the world, the man who destroys the world.

These theorems, as you mention, are often applied in the whole extension of man's reality, I believe that he is not wrong, in fact, I agree with him.

Welcome to our community.

Thank you...

Interesting article, I had not heard of Maslow's theorem. I admit that many of us are looking for a formula to explain the events of the world around us and to know what are the most favorable actions to be successful or effective. The simplicity with which Maslow approaches the subject of human needs and progress can serve many as an elementary part of a more complex process, such as existence and the search for knowledge.
Greetings, thanks for sharing @volkiceper

Thanks. Maslow is one of the most important scientists of the humanist school. He is one of the most worthy of research and reading.

Es bueno saberlo, leeré un poco acerca del autor, gracias por la info

It is great, i will reading about him. Thx guy!
