Genetic Information Workplace Discrimination

in #genetics7 years ago

Here is a pilar of Egalitarian Liberalism that will surely fall. Genetic information may not be lawfully used to choose between (discriminate between) potential employees or insurance applicants, according to the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008. Yet one of the apparent foundations of the Left is science above all other reason. If genetic science shows that genes predispose certain people to disease or disorder, as well as distinguish between talents and abilities, then why would they reject such a principle? Shouldn't people be allowed to choose the best applicants or workers? Isn't genetics just another layer of reason to support better decisions?
Apparently not. This seems to be a major fissure in the fabric of the Establishment and the Left Wing. This is a particular issue that cuts through their rhetoric and exposes some of their hypocrisy. Even if this law stays in effect, I bet you that Americans are already selecting people based on genetics for a host of reasons, from spousal partners to brighter students to stronger athletes. This stream of human history cannot be stomped out by a little law. Whether you like it or not, there will continue to be a divergence between the richest and most powerful and the lowest and least privileged. Genetic selection will surely lead to the acceleration of the higher classes far ahead of the lower ones. It is possible that in a number of generations, the highest class of society will be so different from the low ones that they constitute a distinct sub-species of humans.

"Under Title II of GINA, it is illegal to discriminate against employees or applicants because of genetic information. Title II of GINA prohibits the use of genetic information in making employment decisions, restricts employers and other entities covered by Title II (employment agencies, labor organizations and joint labor-management training and apprenticeship programs - referred to as "covered entities") from requesting, requiring or purchasing genetic information, and strictly limits the disclosure of genetic information."
