A rhythm game story: osu!

in #gaming6 years ago (edited)

Writing about this game reminds me of a phase of my life that I lived listening to no one and accepting nothing, and just tried so hard to be myself, doing what I wanted to do while the people I cared about didn't accept the things I was doing in life and expected big things out of a little child like me. It was a hard one, and things hit the roof real hard for me and I'm sure it was the same for everyone around me as well.

The current opening screen of the game osu!

osu! was developed by Dean Herbert from Australia also known as peppy. The inspiration for the name of the game came from the DS game that was also named osu!

The game is in fact a collection of four different genre of rhythm games being piled up and coming together to make a new rhythm game altogether with four different modes. osu! is one of the hardest rhythm games I have ever played or come across.

RHYTHM GAMES

Pretty sure a butt load of you already know what rhythm games are and a lot of you should know osu! by now because it is one of the biggest or should I say the biggest free rhythm game out there?

You tap to the beat of the rhythm, that's what a rhythm game is, you tap to the beat, osu! on the other hand is probably a bit more hardcore than just that. It'll look easy at first, but, just wait for it.

osu!

osu! consists of four different game modes, namely, osu! Standard, osu! Mania, Taiko and Catch The Beat.

Standard

Standard mode.

The standard mode being the main mode of them all, played by the most amount of people and of course what I'd like to consider the hardest mode of them all, just like the DS game osu, this game was similar in gameplay.

You click circles around the screen to the rhythm, pretty basic, using a mouse or a graphics tablet, it does sound easy, but once you play the harder difficulties and turn those extra mods to make the game and the gameplay itself much, much harder, that's where the fun is and that's where all the fun starts.

Taiko

Taiko.

I hope you guys know what Taiko is, it's a Japanese percussion instrument that has been time and time again, made into rhythm games, beat to the drum, BUT THE BEATS ARE WAY TOO FAST. Honestly, you just have to play it to believe what the game truly feels like. It's ungodly. The speed, the sheer amount of inputs per second, impossible. There are four different inputs being split 2:2, so two buttons doing pretty much the same thing, pressing red circles and blue circles with precise timing and beat but so spammy.

Catch The Beat

Catch The Beat mode.

This was a fun little one where you had to catch fruits falling from the sky, slow or fast didn't matter, what mattered was how well you could control your little tray sliding through the screen in vertical motion with an extra gliding mechanic to make it glide through the screen. Beat that for catching fruits and shoving them in a tray.

Mania

Mania mode.

Mania was considered one of the second in line of most people in favor of than the other two modes as this was just like one of the really popular rhythm games of this generation; Guitar Hero or more likely to be considered a portrayal of beatmania closer than Guitar Hero but it follows the same concept. This like all the others is just as flip. I can never play this mode, for the fucking life of me.

MODS

Selection screen of all the mods all in one place.

The game had mods to make the game easier or harder depending on what mod you selected. Some mods multiplied your score so that your score was higher so there was of course incentive to using these selected mods.

The Hidden mod would hide the circle before you clicked it, rhythm perception needs to be on peak.
The DoubleTime mod would increase the speed of the song by 0.5 times the actual speed of the song.
The NoFail mod would not let you fail a song even if your health bar has gone down to zero(0).
The Hardrock mod made the approach rate of the circles faster, makes the circle size smaller and you are more vulnerable to losing your health bar if you miss than without the mod.
