114 Page Study Suggests Facebook Users Are Happier If They Leave For A Month

I'm not surprised at all. The problem is despite what the lovely image on front look like, you can't exactly delete your Facebook app if it came pre-loaded with your phone. You can jump through some hoops if you know a thing or two about tech devices. But that's just too complicated for most users. Personally I've never logged into Fb with my smartphone's app.

Abstract:

The rise of social media has provoked both optimism about potential societal benefits and concern about harms such as addiction, depression, and political polarization. We present a randomized evaluation of the welfare effects of Facebook, focusing on US users in the runup to the 2018 midterm election. We measured the willingness-to-accept of 2,844 Facebook users to deactivate their Facebook accounts for four weeks, then randomly assigned a subset to actually do so in a way that we verified. Using a suite of outcomes from both surveys and direct measurement, we show that Facebook deactivation (i) reduced online activity, including other social media, while increasing offline activities such as watching TV alone and socializing with family and friends; (ii) reduced both factual news knowledge and political polarization; (iii) increased subjective well-being; and (iv) caused a large persistent reduction in Facebook use after the experiment. We use participants’ pre-experiment and post-experiment Facebook valuations to quantify the extent to which factors such as projection bias might cause people to overvalue Facebook, finding that the magnitude of any such biases is likely minor relative to the large consumer surplus that Facebook generates.

Why was a 114 page study needed to prove something that was an aim of F-c-book?

One of F-c-book's plans was to see how well they could manipulate people's emotions.

Here, Sam Vaknin explains, and breaks down this setup that was designed to make people unhappy

Huge research papers have a perceived authority for those who are dumb enough to not understand simple things.

The only consumer surplus that I see (why people tell me they still use it) is that 'its the only way to contact everyone'.

We'll see how long that remains true, because if their only value-add is network effect I think they are going to trigger a vicious cycle of facebook flight sooner rather than later.

Encrypted chat is going to become popular eventually. Getting into crypto also introduced me to Telegram and I don't trust any other messaging app as much as Telegram. They even have a great track record of standing up for user privacy. Facebook Messenger isn't even a that great. FB is also becoming a thing for older people (https://sproutsocial.com/insights/new-social-media-demographics/) and the youngest crowds are more into Snapchat and Instagram. Snapchat isn't going to turn a profit. It's almost beautiful how these things are getting ready for a crash. We also have things like this:

Nice video, and I am now following that youtube channel!

I continue positioning myself for an upcoming crash, there is a lot at stake in many spheres and I believe we are going to see the conditions ripe for an increase in consciousness.

I’m much happier since I left Facebook forever. What a waste of time
