An excerpt from Rumi

in #rumi8 years ago

One of my favourite writer's is Rumi. I picked up a copy of the pocket rumi while I was shopping in San Francisco one day, which has proven to always be a good companion for me along the way. I'm sure we could attempt to update this poem in particular, in ways that may or may not seem applicable. One of the things that has always stuck out for me with this poem is its simplicity, and effectiveness. It speaks volumes to me (no pun intended) and always brings a light to my minds eye.

The Tongue
by: Rumi, taken from Mathwani I, 1702

O tongue, you are an endless treasure.
O tongue, you are also an endless disease.

It sets my mind on fire to contemplate the simplicity of these words. Likewise, we can look at nearly any piece from this period and know that the language they spoke at that time was much deeper and rooted in a heavier substance than the way we flagrantly pass words these days. I am sure you have a friend who would seek to speak, only to hear their own voice. And here, you see me doing something much similar. Difference being, it's your choice to read on.

So, the only way I could seek to expand or innovate this poem would be readdress the use of the tongue. Which is not yet obsolete. God help us, if it ever did. It's one of the core elements of our body that we rely on.

Either way, I hope you have enjoyed todays food for thought!
