Relaxed coloring session with an old sketch
I started this sketch a few months ago and decided to change the entire thing! Go, figure. I wanted to keep the imagine the same and just add to it, but I wasn't feeling it. This sketch was originally a black pencil sketch on a red background.
I used a reference of Ceilidh Joy. She's far from innocent. She's a mess and crude at times but I like it.
I didn't want to be tempted with the idea of revisiting old ideas so I went through and deleted layers that weren't in use.
I tried to find different methods of building more depth to the hair and skin. I ended up using the carbon stick tool with the opacity at it's lowest.
The highlights are a combination of the technical pencil tool and marker brush tool.
I threw in some blue tones for a little bit of fun and blended lightly.
Thanks for swinging by and checking out my sketch! 🦊
What do you enjoy most when sketching?

Very nice! I love the shading on this.
Thanks @xyanthon! It's one of my favorite things to do.
nice work! :D
Thank you!
Really pretty sketch! I like watching the layers in action in the gif. The blue really makes it pop!
When I'm sketching, I need music. There are a few albums that I used to listen to on repeat when I was doing a ton of character development sketches. And while I do enjoy them, they're not typically what I would listen to while doing anything else. lol (Is that totally weird? Or is that something other ppl do as well?)
Not weird at all. I usually have to listen to something fast paced, mainly instrumentals. I sketch along with the beat and laugh at how I've conditioned myself.
lol I'm so glad it's not just me. I used to listen to a lot of Björk... I think her voice and the flow of the music almost put me in a trance. hahaha
She has a very sweet demeanor. Her portrait and tones makes me think of your diary posts with your photo sets.
It's funny that you said that. I was telling someone that I usually sketch things that look similar to how I would photograph them myself. If I don't find the image interesting then it's hard to sketch.
They say artists have a tendency to paint themselves into our work as our faces and likes are what we see in the mirror each day. So we naturally copy from life. Our visage is what is most familiar to us and thus ends up in the work that we do whether it was our intent or not.
I often find myself in the work I do but not until months or years later when I have fresh eyes to really look at it.
Hey, amazing artwork! I love the color that you used.
Thank you! These are my favorite colors.
Nice work! Do I understand this correctly.. its digital? Fascinating how you bring the old masters approach into the 21st century. Compliments.
Since its my job, I draw most of the day. Listening to music or audio books most of the time. Back in the old days, like so many of my artists friends I had a TV running in my studio 8-)
Thank you! Wow, I'm extremely flattered and yes, it is digital. I can't say that I'm a pro with all these new tools but I'm able to approach my digital art as if I were using traditional media.
That must be nice to spend your days drawing. I also listen to music to guide me into a mood when I draw and sometimes I'll play a movie for white noise, but this is all done on my iPad through split screens. :)
I like my job and I feel very privileged, that I can make a living as an artist/painter. Drawing and painting all day can be challenging too at times, particularly when working on a difficult spot. Then I actually find it much easier to do some hard physical work around the house ;-)
Looking forward to see more of your work!
I can definitely understand that. I'm excited to see more from you as well!
