Inktober Day 4: Spell
Casting spells for sweet dreams
My sleep schedule was out of wack the other night so I turned in early. Then we went to see the new Venom movie so I wasn’t able to make my inktober post until now. I was super excited for the fourth prompt because I wanted to try out some new inking techniques.
The progress...
I started by sketching an outline of the hands in a strong position. I wanted the hands to be glowing like this person was in the middle of spell casting so I mapped out a simple guideline for placement.
The hands took me forever! I used the Studio Pen again and the liquify tool helped me a ton since my fingertips always turn out a little wonky. I also don’t typically draw on nails for my hands but they look good. :D
I added a light wash of color to the background in circular motions. This helped me to remember the direction for inking in the shadows.
I wasn’t sure how I’d ink in the shadows so I pulled up a few comic book and manga references for inspiration.
I didn’t want the background to be completely blacked out so I chose the hardest route and began adding in lines to give the impression of movement.
I added a second layer of lines for contrast.
With the tool thickness a bit higher, I added more lines to the outer corners and this image was complete. I considered shading the hands but it wouldn’t make sense unless this was in color because the light from the spell is glowing so strongly that the hands are completely lit up.

I would like to know what spell he is doing.
I have many problems making hands, many times I go wrong and I have to do and redo! but yours are very good in the end if it was good that you left blank because you can see very well the effect of light and with all the shadow you applied this great.
A sleeping spell ^^
Thanks! I was told that hands need to look like peanuts. It’s a little easier with that thought I placed.
To the peanuts?
I never heard that before, hehehe, at first it was hard for me to do them but now I practice a little with my hands and I see the positions, but you make them very realistic
Hmmmmm that spell I want, to rest a little
That definitely looks like the person is spell casting, very nice and illustrative pose, foxxie :D.
And did you enjoy Venom? I heard the review is pretty bad for that one.
Thanks scrawly!
Mmm. I’d give it a 6.5/10 🤔 It was a little entertaining and definitely kid friendly. I thought they missed a lot of opportunities with keeping it PG-13.
These are magical hands. I was excited to mist the words for #inktober with #drawlloween only I mistook the inktober word 'drooling' for 'dripping' oh well, it's sort of the same thing, right?
Get some rest! :)
Hahah! I’d make that mistake too but they’re practically the same!
Very nice, foxi ! The hands are expressive and you make such effective use of action lines to add motion and drama into the picture :) Definitely looks like a spell-casting pair of hands :D
Yay! I’m glad you can see the spell casting in the image. It took me a long time to do the lines so I was a bit unsure at first.
