The big holiday run

in #travel8 years ago (edited)

Tomorrow the last region of Holland get's it's holiday. In Holland it is alway divided into three regions:

  • North
  • South
  • Mid part

Every region is getting holiday's a week later. They have introduced this so that not the whole country is going on Holiday at once.
Every year it rotates so that on year the region is at first, and the next year a week later and so on. So from with tomorrow all regions are having holidays. There is a lot of traffic to be expected to the southern parts of Europe (Belgium, France and Spain). So there will be some traffic jams I think...

Notorious are the 'Black saturday's' , these day's are to be expected the most busy saturday's and not a good moment to travel to your destination. (but still a lot of people do, strange isn't it)

Don't travel tired

This morning I read in a dutch newspaper that people often are so excited the night before going on holiday, that they aren't getting enough sleep but to drive for hours the next day. Combined with the warmth it is just as dangerous to drive in a very tired condition then it is when someone has drunk...

What to take on a holiday

If you are going on a plane trip you are limited to the ammount of luggage you can take with you in a plane, but with a caravan or single car it's a bit different. You probably know the stories of (typical Dutch) people taking for 3 weeks potatoes with them... Well I can asure you, it does happen. I know some examples of people taking almost groceries for the entire holiday, including soda drinks, beer and stuff... Besides the fact you can get that also in France, Spain, Croatia or whatever in similar prices, why would you do it?

Me myself for instance like to drink local beers on my destination, why would i bring my own beer..
I can imagine that you would bring products that aren't available on your destination, like peanutbutter from Holland, or some food to survive the trip and the first day on the camping :)... Also overcharging is a danger in traffic, I really seen accidents a long the way to France with caravan's which weren't properly loaded which caused them to tilt behind the car.

Our holidays

For years we had a caravan of our own.

Usually we would go to France or Spain for the summer holiday, during the year we often stayed for some day's on other campings in and around holland. For three years now we have sold the caravan, we left the choice to our kids.
They thought flying was much cooler :) .. And to be honest, my wife was finished with the caravan and the traveling with it.

And I can't really blame her. Once we were on a trip with our family, my parents in law and my brother in law with his family. We went to France in colonne. My brother in law drove first because it was his first year with a caravan, we were in the middle and my parents in law at the end. Somewhere in France my brother in law made a quick move to the left what caused the caravan to jump from left to right, he could barely keep it on the road. Lucky him he got the control back but his wife, my wife and my parents in law were in panic crying of the fact that it just went good and that things had could be much worse....

Since then my wife didn't really liked traveling with caravan anymore, although nothing happened ever with us...
I didn't regret selling the caravan too because although people think a caravan is a great sense of freedom and somehow cheaper for a holiday, I think the opposite is true....

Friends sometimes say that we were always going 3 weeks with caravan and our last holidays (with plane) always were for 14 or 15 days, so we have shorter holidays...In my opinion this isnt true

  • The price of the caravan itself is quite high. (also the write-down)
  • Trough the year you have to park it in a paid storage
  • Insurance for the whole year
  • Equipment, tent, etc...
  • I have to fetch the caravan a week before we go to clean, pack and check. (so three or four days work)
  • We drive to France or spain in 2 days (21 days - 2 = 19)
  • When we arrive at the camping we are busy for a whole day to settle down (19-1 = 18)
  • When we leave it costs again one day (18-1=17)
  • The journey back in 2 days (17-2 = 15 days)
  • Back at home unpack the caravan, clean it and bring it to the storage

So effective we have 15 day's on the camping at holiday mode. Just like when we go by plane.
And for being cheaper, on some occasions it will be, but we are tied to the high-season, so campingspots are expensive too. In Spain for instance we paid 70 euro's per night with a caravan. Take the fuel consumption of the car ( A5 at that time 1 liter on 5 km) and the toll roads, then it isn't much cheaper anymore...

We do had a lot of fun and indeed freedom with a caravan, when we wanted to go on a weekend out, we took the caravan and went on... That I do miss sometimes..

For the last 4 years we went flying to different destinations. We've been to Curacao, Lanzarot, Turkey and last year to Rhodos for our summer holidays. Mostly in all-inclusive resorts. At first I thought that it would be difficult for the kids, because it's perhaps harder to find friends to play with.... But of course, there are other families also with kids.. So they never had any problem finding new friends. As a parent you probably think to difficult about that...

So this year we are going to Crete (Greece) together with my brother, his wife and son. I'm really looking forward to it because we are in for some time of...

What is your holiday destination?

Have a great sunny day and stay safe on route !!!!

Fair points. I think things are a little different in the US. Once we get to our campsite my wife and I can have our trailer setup within half an hour before we are sitting down to relax. We also have sway bars, weight distribution bars, and brake controllers that help with control. It can still get dodgy at times. Plus most of us camp have full sized trucks that help with towing as well. As much as we love it, sometimes I just enjoy taking our car and staying in a hotel too!

I think both has it charme of course. I saw the campsites in the states when we were in Florida, no compare hahaha... Those trailers, massive and huge :) love them....

Yeah :) they are pretty big. I was going to mention that too, but I couldn't quite tell the dimensions from your picture. My wife and I upgraded to a larger one a year or two ago, but we are still one of the smaller ones in most parks we visit. Some of the ones you see around here are just insane!

My husband used to own a caravan but only used it less than 10 times. He said that we'd rather have to buy a mobile home or a second-hand Winnebago if we intend to do some camping and tour around Australia.

For me, I'd rather drive our car and check in a hotel or book an accommodation through AirBnb. It's less hassle and more convenient.

Mobile home suits more indeed I guess for australia 😀😀 ... but hotels are great indeed 😉

The all-inclusives are great, we do them every year. No hassle and food / drink always about.

Yes they are great, kids can get whatever they want :) ,not thinking about " what we are going to eat"... brilliant !!

I agree with your wife .... now .... because When the boys were little we were camping too because the ambiance is great, we love Italy so Italy it is.

Ues thats right, when they were little they could walk around the caravan, do games and stuff .. camping still is great.maybe in some years again with a camper 😂

I think it makes sense to stay safe... Over here we don't practise a lifestyle of travelling with caravan, so it is kind of unknown to me. It is good you had tried it and the kids enjoyed that once but it is a good thing to now do something else... :) Enjoy your holidays!! :))

Thank you :) We will , same to you for your holiday !!!!

:) Thank you!!

We went camping to France, really great little camping with a view on the sea. This was just our second year we went camping, so I think we can manage a few more before we get tired of it :P

France has some great campingsites. I 'm not tired of it, still love camping. But resorts are cool too,it doesnt matter to me,as long I can relax :)

You are hitting the nail on its head. i think a caravan is only perfect if you use it for driving daily for like 2/3 hours and setting it up with only the luifel in 2 seconds.

Otherwise if you go to one destination 1200 km south, you can betting rent a rent there or something. The driving makes everybody tired and irritated haha. Although I must say...camping has the warmest memories man!

yes the do, doesn't they... I used to go to campings all of my youth... still got some great memories .... But you are right, 1200 km in two days isn't really ment for carvaning :)
