Music is magic, Music is emotion #16: Tina Turner

in #music7 years ago

Often when I mention that I’ve been to many Tina Tuner concerts my friends are looking a bit funny at me because I’m a real rock orientated music lover. But nevertheless I have a weak for Lady Turner. She is quite a show woman and she has excellent songs and besides all of that, she had her thing in de past...deeply respect her... My first encounter with la’turner was with Sandra (a friend of our family) and Esther (at that time my girlfriend, now since long time my beloved wife). Sandra was a big fan of Tina Turner and asked if we wan’t to come along. Of course we wanted that, for me because I would have a great night with my girlfriend and on the other hand, at that time I didn’t saw many concerts yet so this was a great opportunity to see a great star in a great venue (it was in the westfallen halle in Dortmund Germany).

We went with my fathers car, my favorite an Opel Ascona 2.0 SR,

of we went. Although it is a long time ago ( 12 april 1987) I still remember the evening very clear. The support act was Glass Tiger from the hit Don’t forget me when I’m gone but of course we were there for Tina. It was a great night, we had a lot of fun and the show (although we had seat-tickets) was great.

Some years later Tina came again to Holland, and I (the sweetest guy I am 😉 ) bought Tickets for Esther and myself for the show in Rotterdam. We were front row, Tina’s show’s were always full of energy, she had a great band and great dancers. We had a great evening and enjoyed ourselves very much. That night the stadium speaker announced that she was giving a extra concert in Utrecht with support act Gary Moore, I had to be there so I bought tickets the very next day. I went alone to the Utrecht show and stood right in front of the stage, I met some nice guy’s and before the show and we had a couple of drinks to get into the atmosphere. Boy, Gary Moore was great, it was his “blues alive” tour. I remember the keyboard player playing a big Lesley organ, that was really fantastic. Gary Moore was right at it, what a great guitar-player, to bad he left this planet way to early.

Again the show of Tina was great, you could recognize a little routine in her shows. When it came to “proud mary” for instance, she would always do the same little performance 😊 But nevertheless, it was brilliant.

Tina in Switserland

So I think I saw a show or 10 from Tina. One time she didn’t came to Holland with her tour, the nearest place for us was Basel Switserland. I bought 2 tickets for me and Esther, but Esther didn’t got permission from her parents to go alone with me 😉 So I had to go with my (now) brother in law. It was in a stadium and we went with my car, also an Opel Ascona, a bit of a flashy car. We got hold at the customs and they didn’t believe we came all the way from Holland to visit a Tina Turner concert, so we had to put the whole care up side down. Some things you just never forget. We slept at friends of my parents that night to drive back to Holland the very next day. The show was great, Joe Cocker was supportact, so we had a great time.

I still have a weakness for Tina, but the last two shows in Holland ticket prices went nuts.. It just wasn’t worth it for me… But she is one kind of showgirl……

Have a great night..

Certainly a living legend , love proud Mary. Cheers mike

indeed she is, and proud mary is a great song with a great drive :) Thanks !!

I first heard Tina way back in the early 70s. Such an energetic and sassy performer. Nutbush City Limits was a staple of the school discos and everyone went nuts when it came on. That and Brown Sugar and curiously Jeff Beck's Hi-Ho Silver Lining, a tune he has been trying to live down ever since. I agree about ticket prices to big gigs these days. They're off the goddamn scale. I remember paying a fiver to see the Stones in 1976 at London's Earls Court. It was quite a lot of money in those days for a young lad but nothing compared to the idiotic prices demanded now. Anyway, thanks for your memories and rock on...

Oh yeah, Nutbush City limits, great song... Thanks for the reply, and we will rock on :)

She's one of my all time favorites too. Really I have few icons among the famous, but she's one. Her fame is for her talent but also for who she is as a human being.

Little fun fact: when I lived in Bali I was asked to represent the US in an international natural beauty book. That was fun, but imagine my delight when I learned that Tina Turner loved the book so much that she bought 50 copies! I of course like to imagine that I was one of the things she loved about it, and that my icon appreciated me just a bit in return 😁

Ah, great fun fact.. thanks for sharing , and I'm sure you where one of the reasons she bought 50 copies :)

Tina is a great artist, for sure, whether you like rock or not :)
Nice stories you share with us. If you allow me a little advise: try and concentrate on quality rather than quantity.

Hi @qsounds , thanks for your reply. Although I am trying to let quality rule over quantity I can imagine It won't look like it every time. Not al posts are equals for value, I agree. Thank you for your advice.. I will surely keep it in mind.
