Choices

And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness". And he was called the friend of God. James 2:23.

Abraham believed God literally. In order to succeed in this life as a Christian, we have to believe the Word of God to have been written by holy men who were full of the Holy Spirit and who were directed by God to write down the Scriptures.

Dr. Billy Graham was challenged with this very situation. Many years ago he and two other evangelists were taking the USA by storm, filling stadiums, sports fields and huge halls, and having amazing responses to God's Word. Of the three of them, Billy Graham was very much the junior.

One of the other evangelists was a fine, good looking chap. He was asked to play the main role in the epic movie, The Robe. The other man was a greatly anointed speaker.

They approached Billy Graham and said they needed to go back to Bible College and really search the Scriptures because some of these Scriptures weren't literal, they were maybe just examples, or like folk-tales to give Christians an idea of what they needed to believe in.

One evening Billy Graham felt very perturbed and he went out into a forest. In the forest, there was a stump of a tree that was being cut down. He opened his Bible and put it on the stump. Then he got on his knees and prayed, and made a pact with God.

Lord, I don't understand everything that's written in the Bible but I make a choice. I choose to believe your Word, your written Word, over and above anybody's else's opinions. Please help my unbelief.

With that, he went back. The rest is history. He has become the greatest contemporary evangelist of all time; with literally millions of people listening to him speak the Word and making decisions to serve Christ.

The said part of the story is the other two didn't believe God's Word. The one, a much more successful evangelist than Billy Graham, in the beginning, died as a pauper. They had to ship his body back to his hometown and he had a pauper's funeral. The other one was last reported as living in a little apartment somewhere in Canada, a bitter and disappointed man, an agnostic.

You see faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1.

You don't have to always understand everything to believe. All you have to do is to know the Author of the Book. He will enable you to trust Him.
