Contest entry: Caterpillar to butterfly metamorphosis (Photo story)
One day from my carrots a caterpillar appeared. It was interesting for me to examine it closely, so I got it with two fingers. But then the creature started to move in a way to free itself. Along with that, within the back of it's head a pair of orange horns appeared. That wasn't enough, because it started to release a very sharp, unpleasant smell, so I had to put it on the ground.
The caterpillar wandered around for some time, then suddenly climbed on a dry peas stick and got frozen ;). So I decied to take it with me, easy this time :). On the picture below, you can see how it looked.
It turned to a chrysalis on the next stage...
After 10+ days, it hatched...
It turned out, that the butterfly is from the kind called Old World swallowtail (Papilio machaon). Compared to the caterpillar, the butterfly has a very pleasant, perfume-like smell. It was about time to get her back to freedom.
