Ella Fitzgerald, born April 25, 1917 in Newport News and died June 15, 1996 in Beverly Hills, is an American jazz singer.

His mother worked in a laundry, his father had abandoned the marital home shortly after his birth. She dreamed of being a dancer.

She began singing at the age of 16.

In 1941. Despite her notoriety, she was a victim, like many blacks at the time, of discrimination, she fought throughout her life to prove it. At first, swing singer, she also tackles the bebop. Sarah Vaughan was one of her only rivals in this field.

In 1942, she began a solo career and multiplied the collaborations with jazz musicians like Dizzy Gillespie

Her diabetes blinded her and led the doctors to amputate her two legs in 1993. She died of a heart attack on June 15, 1996 in Beverly Hills, at the age of 79 years.
