It has been a little more than 2 years since I have been studying in Germany. Wow 2 years! I never expected to be able to last this long. I was such a cry baby back then that I can't even last a week in the hostel, 1 hour drive from home. So I am quite proud of myself to be able to survive this long and this far away from my family.
As far as I have experienced, studying abroad is not always sweet and fun, like what many tend to believe. Studying abroad is just like studying in any other places. It’s hard, stressful but there are times when it’s sweet and you will miss it.
Travel every weekend
People often think that we get to travel all the time. Although some are happy for us, there are some who are criticizing us, saying that we are only having fun and wasting money. Well, I can’t blame them since that’s what they see on our Instagram or Facebook. And that’s what we want to show them . Who would want to post the times when they are sad or depressed, when they are in trouble or when they are down. Most of us, don’t want our families to worry so we don’t show it. So it’s understandable that people only think that we are only having fun abroad.
Although it is true that it is easier to travel to other places that are far and too expensive to travel from Malaysia, I wish I have that much money to travel every weekend, but the truth is, we are like any other students. I did check off a few of my bucket list countries and to do so I will have to plan the right time and save some money to travel. And for me, the only free time that I have is during our winter/summer break. That is if I don’t have exams in between.
International friends
For someone as shy and as quiet as me, that could be really hard. I spent most of my time alone. Although I am staying in a hostel and have met some that are friendly and nice, we just don’t share the same interests so the relationship just doesn’t work. However, not having friends by my side all the time doesn’t really bother me that much, especially since I’ve embraced it and now am comfortable with it. In fact, spending most of my time alone gives me the opportunities to discover myself and to listen to my thoughts more.
Language
Hahaha 2 years and I cant say that I am fluent in German. Although I am able to converse in a daily conversation, I still find myself struggling in classes. The are still so many new technical terms that I haven't heard of and I find it is quite stressful to understand the class.
Home
Although Germany is a beautiful country, I can’t help it but to miss home. We often mention about going home. We miss home and everyone at home. We miss home-cooked food and also durian!
Sometimes our homesick get so bad that we even planned our journey home 7 months earlier ( yes I planned mine already) and we checked the website almost every week ( well at least in my case).
However although I’m missing home so much, I try not to mention it to my mom. I do not want to let that I’m constantly missing home
There are still some times where I would break down and cry alone, (especially during winter) only to pick myself up and motivate myself. Studying abroad has been the biggest challenge in my life so far. But it is an opportunity to learn about myself. Every now and then, usually while I'm doing grocery shopping and have to carry heavy bags of groceries, I found myself thinking that I'm doing something that I have never imagined and it's actually not bad.
