DEA Drug Classification: Schedule 1 vs. Schedule 2steemCreated with Sketch.

We often hear that Marijuana is a Schedule 1 drug in the US without stopping to ask what that actually means.

Schedule 1 refers to the highest category of illegal or illicit drugs and, for all intents and purposes, are considered to be the most dangerous. The drugs in this category are what are known as 'controlled substances'.

The United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) classifies Schedule 1 drugs as having the following characteristics:

Schedule 1 Drugs

The drug or other substance has a high potential for abuse.

The drug or other substance has no currently accepted medical treatment use in the U.S.

There is a lack of accepted safety for use of the drug or substance under medical supervision.

No prescriptions may be written for Schedule I substances, and they are not readily available for clinical use.

Drugs / Substances listed in DEA Schedule 1 include:

  • Heroin (diacetylmorphine)
  • LSD (Lysergic acid diethylamide)
  • Marijuana (cannabis, THC)
  • Mescaline (Peyote)
  • MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine or “ecstasy”)
  • GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyric acid)
  • Ecstasy (MDMA or 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine)
  • Psilocybin
  • Methaqualone (Quaalude)
  • Khat (Cathinone)
  • Bath Salts (3,4-methylenedioxypyrovalerone or MDPV)

First of all, I had no idea that people consumed bath salts. I mean, I thought that was something that people sold masquerading as meth. Second, there are a few drugs you might assume to be Schedule 1, like Meth, that are not listed as Schedule 1.

Schedule 2 Drugs

The drug has a high potential for abuse. The drug has a currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States or a currently accepted medical use with severe restrictions. Abuse of the drug may lead to severe psychological or physical dependence.

Drugs / Substances listed in DEA Schedule 2 include:

  • Opium
  • Cocaine
  • Methamphetamine
  • Codeine
  • Fentanyl
  • Methadone

[There are many more substances on the list but my intention is just to show the most recognizable ones.]

DEA

The DEA has a very difficult time explaining how Marijuana is a Schedule 1 drug; high potential for abuse, no acceptable medical treatment use and is unsafe.

Honestly, how is Fentanyl (50 times more powerful than Heroine) and cause of the current 'heroine crisis' and spiking drug related deaths throughout North America a Schedule 2?

What does more harm? Fentanyl/Heroine Or Marijuana?

Here's a hint, just 3 grains of Fentanyl can be fatal while it's practically impossible to die of a weed overdose.

Death by Fentanyl

Fentanyl Makers have made large campaign contributions to prevent recreational marijuana laws from coming into fruition in places like Arizona.

It would seem that the DEA is more concerned with maintaining their own funding, continuing the decades long 'war on drugs' policy failure, incarcerating millions and profiting from asset forfeiture than to confront some of the most basic questions about the US government's own drug policies and incomprehensible drug classifications.

US Rep. To Deputy Director of Drug Policy: You're 'Part of the Problem'

"If a professional like you cannot answer clearly that Meth is more dangerous than Marijuana, which every kid on the street knows, which every parent knows. If you can't answer that, maybe that's why we're failing..."

"If the deputy director of the office of drug policy can't answer that question, how do you expect high school kids to take you seriously?"

The most dangerous thing about pot is being caught ..with it.. 😇🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩 and might endanger the worlds doughnut supply .. Ah thats it the police are protecting there doughnut supply .. It all so clear to me now lol

Great Article, That is a a joke.. Cocaine/Meth are schedule 2. And it's also interesting that bath salts have already made the Schedule 1 list. They've only been around for a few years, Yet weed has been a schedule 1 one for 50 years with tons of studies and they do nothing about it.. What a crock of shit!

Great post. I thought I would share my recent post on cannabis with you.

Marijuana being a schedule 1 drug is all about money. As soon as other states make Marijuana recreationally legal the government will make it schedule 2 in my opinion. I believe alcohol does more damage to the body then Marijuana.

I'm waiting for the unbelievable new cure that will come when scientists can experiment with marijuana in the lab. Not to be curtailed to just one marginal strain grown in Mississippi, under Federal control. But experiment all types of buds. Your body was formed with endocannabinoid receptors for a reason.

The #1 reason marijana is still illegal, and will remain so as long as possible, is the fact that the global banking system is 100% dependent on illicit drug money. Since marijuana is the #1 sold illicit drug, consisting of the majority of these funds, legalizing it would mean GLOBAL FINANCIAL COLLAPSE. I am not even exaggerating. Do I think marijuana should be illegal? No. Is there real consequence to legalization. Very much so.

My initial reaction would be "unbelievable"...but quite honestly I believe anything however outrageous of the US.
It just has to change!
Here in Ireland we are no closer to legalisation of cannabis, particularly for medicinal use. Oh they are" thinking " about it, but as my doctor says, in reality it could be 5-10 years before we see any change.

Great article @v4vapid. How many people has marijuana killed compared to alcohol???! Government regulations on "drugs" are hypocritical. One more thing off the topic- I am trying to spread awareness about what really happened in London Bridge on June 3rd. Please check out my brief post and if you think it is worthy please resteem it to your followers.

Please read my article about investment opportunities in the marijuana business and maybe we can share thoughts about weed,
