Welcome The New Voting Distribution for the Utopian Bot And Moderation Rewards!
As part of our planned upgrades, the Utopian Bot has undergone various changes to adopt a more decentralised approach based on our brand new scoring system.
Getting an Utopian Upvote
Prior to this update, only contributions which were marked as accepted by a Utopian Moderator could enter the voting round. Now, contributions with a score of at least 80 and a total influence greater than or equal to that made by one moderator, can enter the voting round. Contributions are only eligible for the voting round 48 hours after submission, for them to gather enough scores from the community.
This spreads the distribution of influence more between all Utopian users, rather than having it concentrated among Moderators alone.
Factors for an Utopian Upvote
The Utopian Bot now considers the following factors for entering contributions into the voting round.
1. Staff Picks
Contributions which were marked as Staff Picks by our Community Managers always enter the voting round first and they are the first ones to be voted. They are an example of top quality and serve as guidance for the community. Such contributions always get the maximum upvote possible based on the categories they are in.
2. Top Scored with Highest Influence
Just after Staff Picks, all the other contributions may enter the voting round. The order starts with those that got the best scores and where the scores were made by users with the biggest influence overall on the platform. The list goes on sorting contributions according to their scores and the relative influence associated with them.
Voting Power Is Limited
Categories no longer have a minimum vote, only a maximum vote as detailed below. The Utopian Bot can only use 20% of its total voting power, in a day. As a result, not every contribution may enter the voting round, making the Utopian.io vote an incentive only for top quality contributions. The Utopian vote is thus not guaranteed for every contribution.
Maximum Vote Strength for Categories
The Utopian Bot will vote on contributions with different voting strengths, depending on category. Every category has a maximum limit.
- Suggestions: 5%
- Development: 30%
- Bug Hunting: 8%
- Translations: 20%
- Graphics: 25%
- Analysis: 25%
- Visibility: 15%
- Documentation: 15%
- Tutorials: 15%
- Video Tutorials: 20%
- Copywriting: 15%
- Blog: 15%
- Task requests: 4%
The values reported above are subject to change as the value of STEEM changes.
Utopian.io is inviting the community to help decide the maximum voting strengths for each of the categories above. Take our survey now!
Moderation Rewards
After restructuring our moderation teams, we turned our attention to their reward structures. They too needed adjustments to reflect the skills, expertise and commitment that Moderators bring to Utopian.
After collecting feedback from all our Moderators and Community Managers, rewards for moderation activities have been increased as follows:
- Suggestions: 2 points per review
- Development: 4.25 points per review
- Translations: 4 points per review
- Graphics: 3 points per review
- Documentation: 2.25 points per review
- Copywriting: 2 points per review
- Tutorials: 4 points per review
- Analysis: 3.25 points per review
- Visibility: 2 points per review
- Blog: 2.25 points per review
- Video Tutorials: 4 points per review
- Bug Hunting: 3.25 points per review
- Task requests: 1.25 points per review
The maximum weekly cap has also been increased to 250 points.
Upcoming Changes
There are a few more exciting changes to look forward to as we make Utopian.io a better place for Open Source participants:
- Better questions for the Quality Questionnaire
- Enhancements to the Projects and Feeds interfaces
- Switching from Rules to Guidelines

I notice that utopian.io does not have a voting category for:
eg. proof of governance done in a community, or execution of reward structure proposed to a community eg. in Curie, ComedyOpenMIc, etc.
Can we have something for this in Utopian, it's an implementation of an idea worth sharing?
this sure looks like something that would marry the upcoming hivemind/communities very well. nice idea.
Hivemind sounds like an insult right, just me?
ok.
So to summarise, contributions can enter a voting round w/o moderator's review. Requirements are:
Score is obvious, but in order to receive total influence of 60, we need a contribution to be reviewed by:
Am I correct? :)
Exactly. You are totally correct on this
Is there any way so that graphic designers and 3D artists can be a part of your team? I really wanna work with this amazing platform and improve myself.
We have a category for designers and graphics contributions. You can check https://utopian.io/task-graphics to find an ongoing task request and you may still find a project in GitHub that would benefit from your contribution and is actually used.
If you mean the work directly for Utopian needs, then it can be answered only by @elear.
Thanks for the info, @espoem. This is just what I was looking for. I look forward to sharing Blender modeling and animation tutorials someday.
Great job guys! That should push the quality way up!
Shouldn't we display all contributions in the main page? Contributions that have not been moderated yet are only accessible in the Review section, and I dont think much people will go in there to score them.
That being said, I m really excited to see where it goes! =)
I agree about showing all in the main page, at least until rejected :)
Mmmh I like the idea where everyone can contribute but 48 hours ? This seems like an unnecessary limit where we can miss the vote just by being unlucky. This incentivizes users to spam moderators just because they are afraid of not being reviewed in time.
Edit : upvoted for visibility
Hey @howo. 48 hours is the time before the contribution may enter the voting round to make sure ut can get enough ratings. It means after 48 hours the contribution is elegible and has more than 4 days to get a chance to be voted.
Aaaaah ok this changes everything my bad :p
Having a simple tags management might speedup the way community search for contributions to review. My use case would be: javascript-tagged development contribution.
You are literally pushing forward vast majority of open-source projects supporting STEEM blockchain.
I'm really impressed. Great job people.
Considering this tags are not actually the posts tags.
As the upvote is not guaranteed, and the number of post tags is limited, given the contributor the max number of tags is a way to allow him to target a greater audience.
It's more on the UI/UX perse.
I have the impression that in some categories it will be very hard to reach this score of 80.
Score 80 is mandatory if a moderator does not review it.
Contributions may get into the voting rounds with lower score as well if they are reviewed by the moderator.
That's literally why I mentioned "Communication" as a "Dislike".
Every update freaks out contributors, haven't had a single one where not some people thought it's over now, because it wasn't clear enough communicated what the consequences are.
It has to be clearly said what exactly changes and what stays the same and that people will still receive upvotes and that this is not the end of utopian as a whole.
Can you share more why you think that Utopian would end? In my opinion, the post contains the needed information and is explained quite simply. It is understandable that the wording might have been better so there is no confusion, nevertheless.
We are here, especially in Discord, to answer any questions that our users have.
After reading this I was 100% sure, that only posts with a score of at least 80 are upvoted, resulting in a minority of posts getting the upvote.
This would imho have broken utopian.
I think I don't have to elaborate any further why this would be bad for contributors, projects and utopian as a whole. I mean, we do want to get more people to do contributions, right? And a too high hurdle for beginners (or even experienced developers) would demotivate them, resulting in fewer good contributions...
Of course stuff that is clearly against the rules or really really bad to the point of being spam should deserve no upvote. But if something brings value to a project it should be upvoted (even if it is just a little).
I can see the cause of misunderstanding and it could be probably solved by adding one word.
There is no real "little" or "symbolic" vote at the moment.
Utopian votes are meant for the best of the best. If there are not enough of them, then other people may be upvoted as well.
Yes definitively. Very often it's just these little things that would improve the understanding.
Is it actively beeing rounded? Because I thought it should be the score times the maximum upvote for the category.
I haven't seen too many of the best of the best anywhere ;)
I read that part many times also and I did not really think that it makes that much difference. It is possible to misunderstand, though.
The vote is given in discrete values from 1 to 100 (excluding 0 because that means no vote). I hope I am not mistaken as I do not recall seeing decimals in the votes.
As I said, if there are not enough of the best, the others are still in the queue. There are going to be new QAs in the questionnaire that should be more suitable for each category.
We can see that lots of contributions get higher score because of questions that do not allow to give lower score, unless the user answers falsely.
These^ words should be mentioned in the article also. The related discussion proves that people are misleading whole conception. Not only +80 score contributions have a chance to be rewarded.
exactly this is why i wrote above my comment....i dont know how it will be implemented in a way to let people be stimulated in doing contributions.....maybe as stated "Contributions are only eligible for the voting round 48 hours after submission, for them to gather enough scores from the community." the community will have also the power to give some judgement on the work and give a score in order to make it less centralaized on moderators. if this is not the case then only mods will get the highest scores as they will abuse their power and give a boost to their contributions.
As @espoem already mentioned a score of 80 is only needed to enter the voting round when a moderator or community manager hasn't reviewed it. We have also been working on improving the questionnaire, so quality contributions will definitely be able to reach a score of 80!
thanks for the clarification !! then this could be a great way to stimulate networking in the community and let people be more active on utopian !! Thanks again
Hello. How do I get help with utopian.io? I have questions that are not answered anywhere in the FAQ. I cannot find any channel of communication with any member of utopian.io team other than their Steemit pages. Is there a discord channel for utopian.io? A Steemit.chat? An email? Thanks.
Hi, we have Discord. We also have a help desk, where you can submit your questions.
Thank you for this great update! I believe the moderators are well motivated now.
We had this in mind for some time. We saw that moderators do a lot in Utopian.
This should significantly improve the quality of contributions! Well done.
We will see more improvements when the community starts scoring its members and networking with each other.
